Can I turn my distributor?

76 chevy 350- due to the size of my air cleaner, I ran out of room to turn my distributor counter clockwise for timing adjustments. I cant afford a smaller filter, so here is the question. Can I lft the dist turn it clockwise and put it back in so I will have room to turn the dist? Do I mark the location pf the "rotor" prior tp lifting and make sure its in the same marked position when it is seated. Does that make sense?

Yup....

You may however need to bump the starter to get it to drop into the oil pump drive....I normally try to rough align the pump with a long screwdriver before dropping it in...

Yup I agree with gt. But you really don't have to pull the dizzy. Get #1 at tic and just spin the dizzy back and which ever post it falls under is your new #1 spot. Or just rotate the wires one terminal backwards

Just walk the plug wires around: firing order is 18436572, move 1 to 2, 2 to 7, etc....the back the distributor down 45 degrees and you'll be at the same timing, but with more room to advance it. If you're running a Chevy, keep it around 36 degrees total...maybe a bit more without domed pistons cuz you don't have to chase the flame around the mountain, ....full advance at 3000 rpms should work well

Walking the dist wires won't work because the dist cap will still be in the same position. What issues do I need to watch out for as far as marking it or something so the timing will be where it is now if I lift and turn the dist, or do I just have to start over if I lift and turn?

just set the motor at TDC, pull the dist, rotate it to where you want it to be, drop it back in, make sure its pointing at #1, give it a 1/2" turn and start it up, slap a timing light on it and set it to 36* total at 3k rpms. done deal.

The point was, if you move the wires one position, you can then rotate the distributor 45 degrees(45 x 8 = 360) and then have correct timing. There is no need to pull the distributor, simply rotate it, but you will need to reset timing.

Walk all the wires counterclockwise 1 position, then turn the whole distributor clockwise about 45 degrees. This will result in THE EXACT SAME TIMING YOU HAVE NOW, but with the ability to advance it, up to 45 degrees before you hit the air cleaner again.
