change from 460 to a 454 . . .
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:29:27 PM »
hello all . . . i think you might remember me, i was having the water in my oil issues with the BBF.  well here's the deal currently, was out at elsinore on friday and started the boat in the water. . . . ran smooth for about 5 minutes.  got warmed up and continued to run.  so decided to take if off the trailer completely and give it a run around the lake.    it ran great. . . idled a little high but got that adjusted out.  got out to the other side of the lake and turned her off and checked the oil . . . .everything looked good.!   a small amount of "milk" in the oil but i was just guessing it was from running new oil thru the engine.

engine continued to run smooth.  no weird sounds or anything of that nature.   checked the oil a few times, it didn't seem to be getting any worse.   was out on the water a total of about an hour.  i dont have a bimini top so wasn't going to be out  there too long.    by the time we took the boat out of the water and got it tied down and go the seadoo out of the water. the engine oil turned completely to milk.  and it was still pretty dark, but it there was definitely water present.  here's the kicker . .. . the oil level didn't change.

so here's my dilemma .. .   completely rebuild the 460 OR change to a 454 OR sell the boat . . .  any ideas? ? ?  money is kind of an issue. . . so  i'm just stumped as to what to do . . . any ideas? ? ? ?

Changing the engine from 460 to 454 won't do anything for you other than get you a much thinner wallet. I can't believe I just typed that, I love Chevrolet's.   ???

The water could be getting in through a bad gasket, a cracked exhaust log, too much water going into headers at low engine speeds, too much water pressure, and of course crack(s) in the heads/block/etc... Water getting into the oil seems to be a pretty common problem among jets.

What is on your engine? Logs? Headers? stock intake? What system are you using to help keep the water pressure down?

Hey Sandaddict,

Offroader310 already has a man's motorHe has a Ford.  They are a thinking man's engine that ain't no "Wal-Mart motor" like a chebby....where all kinds of parts are simply bought and slapped on in a desperate effort to find more power....for which all the aftermarket parts are available because THEY ARE NEEDED since the the mass production factory componentry is more weak and frail for performance applications and, overall, when utilized simply cannot generate the power that the oem factory Ford parts can....not with the chebby being plagued with bigger (lower compression) combustion chambers, needing the requried bigger/heavier pistons for a decent compression ratio, the inferior valve angles, the overall weaker crankshaft, the lower deck block (Ford's block is taller than even chebby's "tall" deck), the smaller bore, the wimpy 7/16" head bolts, the spur gear oil pump (UGH!), need I go on???

Man oh man, the amount of money it takes these days to build a chebby that makes power....compared to a Ford....let alone the engine change;  forget it.  Oh and in case you didn't know, before you bring up the aftermarket parts availability BS that chebbys have and Ford's don't, you might want to get out of the 1980's and look at all the stuff you can get for a Ford 460 these days....

Offroader310, you need to diagnose your engine problem, pure and simple.

I was(and still am)having the same problem with my 460. I took it in to a shop and was told it was the t-valve that went bad. I had it replaced with a bassett t-valve and the oil changed. I took it out to the lake and no problem, the oil looked nice and clean when i got it home. However, the second time i took it out to the lake(2 weeks ago)the problem started again and this time there was alot of milk. TheChaz was out there with me and upon his inspection he thought it was the intake manifold gasket going bad. With a quick visual inspection you can almost see the gasket has gone to hell. Also, the intake manifold(Edelbrock Performer RPM)has stress cracks where the bolts are, it also has seen better days. So with that said i bought a new manifold(same one), gaskets, and the like. Im gonna install it here in about 30 minutes and then change the oil and see what happens.

Im also curious though if i might be getting to much water from the headers(Bassett twisty's). I was told to leave the water valve cracked open at 3/4 and leave it there and it should shut the water off at 1500rpm or so. I was told that Bassett t-valves are set up this way. Any opinions?

hey all, i'm back,  still having the same problem . . .anyone want to help me diagnose the issue?    anyone want to buy my issue?

i'm thinking about selling it, but i dont have any idea as to how much i can get for it.  the motor still runs strong.  i was out at Lake Elsinore last week with it and ran around the lake really well. i want to keep it, but i dont want to spend any more money on this boat.
i have 2 sea doos right now, and i think thats enough until my life starts.  so . . . .   here's my dilemma .. . how much do i sell it for?

its 1974 Holmes Horizon hull, a "70's"  Ford 460, and un-registered trailer( yes i have a pink slip but the trailer doesn't have the numbers stamped on it, so needs a number plate to match the pink and its ready to register, oh and its got 4 brand new tires)   the boat interior is grey tweed with a rip on the top of the driver side seat.   i'll post some pics if anyone is interested or give me a call and i can show the boat.     714.331.1779  or hamano6@gmail.com

thanks again for all your help guys, i just think its time to move on it i have the money for a boat.
