Cutting Long Tube Bassetts to make them Sort Tube?
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:44:01 AM »
Guys,

I am looking for some OT's for my Hallett and am finding a lot of 'Long Tube' models :banghead:....but I want short ones....so can I cut them?

If so what are the repercussions if any?

Thanks.

I've heard cutting them will make less power not more. I assume you plan on running them dry.

yes you can cut them, and old school method of telling how long they need to be is take a tire crayon and mark them along the colector. then run the boat where the crayon is not melted is where you make the cut.

Ok, I got it, so you take the crayon and run a long line along the collector and at the first point that the line is not melted is where it's safe to make your cut? I like the idea...seems pretty simple.

Dumb question time...the "collector" is the large 4"+/- tube that is that part that acutally goes out and over the transom right?

That's what I've done as well. Or if the headers have a few seasons on them you can see where the collector on the header stops getting hot, and cut there

Are you asking the question about running them dry because of the black/hot water that will be dripping on transom or is their some other reason that I dont know of?

Yep, sounds like your aware, I've seen some cut so short, it looks like they'd be draining into the boat.

water is not suppose to comes out of the header till 16 - 1800 rpm and it will blow past your boat, if you get water you are runnig to much thru your headers,

I got it, thanks guys, I will just have to put them on and see what they look like before I make any major mods. Hey Ralph, can you shed some light on my collector question above when you get a chance?
