I have a couple set up questions if anyone has ever messed with these. I just bought one that im going to use in my flat bottom. I know that there needs to be a ground switch to turn the motor off and on again. My question is, is there anything to do so that I won't get juiced when the boat is running? My brothers old boat had a shocking problem with an HEI. Also it's a points style, is there a good place to get parts?

I dont know about getting shocked unless you were back there licking it or something, but I will tell you this: NO resistor plugs or wires. Run GOOD wires, ground switch and wire. Close your plug gap up to .018-.020. My mag, MSD Pro-Mag, wants 250 RPMs to start. Mags now days use rare earth magnets so they dont need recharging. Use dielectric grease on all your boots. Ask Don about a buzz box to set timing, mags can fuc with timing lights. I've heard of using a timing light with a separate power supply (battery). I know its a boat but try to keep it out of moisture, like sitting all winter under a tarp. And of course you know get it spinnin before you hit the mag. Thats about all I can add. You going to Avi next month?

I am going to Avi next month yes. I have never messed with a mag, I have heard a lot about them through my Volkswagen years but have never owned one. I understand the basics but when you said spin it first before you hit the mag? What is that for? To get the charge first?

If you just bought a used one,, spend the time and money to have it checked out so you don't fight the thing from the  beginning.  Zig is maybe 4 weeks out or so, we are waiting on one that is at his shop for an injected engine that is supposed to dyno next week.

I ran a mag on my turbo ski race engine years ago with no issues, and it always started easily with no switch off/switch on games, but it was a low compression engine (for the turbos).  On a higher compression engine, if the starter does not spin the engine quick enough, it will be hard to start with a mag, thus the concept of spin it and flip the switch.  The .018"-.020" plug gap is also correct and critical if you want it to run.

Some timing lights work with a mag, no problem, can't recall what brand I was using when I ran mine, but my engine always ran well, never burned pistons.  Tachometer is another story, you will need to do some research on that, may be an adapter that lets you run your Moon tach if it's not compatible,, should be able to call them and ask?

Look into these if you have some free time. I know in the description it says external coil but look at the "intructions" tab and it shows you can wire it to your kill wire. You ARE correct sir. Ground=OFF. I was told by the guy I got the boat from He spun the motor till he got oil presure then hit the mag. I just installed a Crane ignition on one of the Harleys and in electric start mode it kills the fire for the first couple revs. Hey how's yer impeller doin? Better order one.

The impeller still sucks, water that is.

Knock on wood but I haven't had a lock of problems with mine. I could trade you straight across for motors so you can use the magnaflow pump :-)

Exactly what I'm sugggesting the the young fella, If you didnt just put one in, order one. When it DOES go out, ya got one in yer hip pocket. I was surprised to find mine'll runa Bassett t.....perfectly. Water comes on about 1500 RPMs
