For You Ford Guys
« on: January 02, 2009, 11:01:51 AM »
My buddy has a 76 Southwind daycruiser with a 460 in it, with a single holley 650. I've never been out on the water on it, but he tells me it keeps dying on him. he will drive it good for a good half hour to 45 mins, then it ill just shuts off, then will not start. it has to cool down for an hour or so before it will start again. i know there is a thousand of possibilites!  :screwy: i am going to head up to his house this weekend to give him a hand and kind of would like to narrow the solution down. anyone have any ideas?

Possibly ignition? What kind of set up does he have? I've had coils and ignition boxes do that to me before

Replaced both, MSD has a very good warranty, I went with an E-Coil after that though

Heres a stupid one, are/is the fuel tank(s) vented, could be getting under vacuum if not...could just be running out of fuel, had one kick my in the late 90's that had a kinked vent hose and would run for around an hour, then would die and not restart, open the fuel fill (sealed) it would suck in air and away you went again, for about an hour. :banghead:

hey PW whats an E coil ???   Mark

Just a different style coil, from the traditionary cylinder shaped one... I don't know why they call it an E-coil.... doesn't really look like the letter E lol.... I just bought one for a 1995 F-150 from Napa and haven't has a lick of trouble since...

This is an E-coil, I bought a stock one for a Ford truck, but there are High performance ones as well that I have used on drag cars

I think the E in E-coil stands for epoxy.  Because the cylinder type coil is oil filled.

If it's a stock engine with a cast intake it may well be a vapor lock.

I would pull a plug wire off the distributor and verify spark or not when it was dead.

Next check for fuel.  My CV23 with a 460 was sucking the fuel line shut on the tank side when the hose had some age on it and the engine compartment was warmed up.

These would be the easy things I can think of...  are you talking electronic or points ignition??

I really doubt the coil is the issue, that would be to easy and they're pretty darn dependable.   If you take a spare along and just plug it in when it died you'd know for sure.

Just my 2 cents from ford experiances   :)
