If it's a stock engine with a cast intake it may well be a vapor lock.
I would pull a plug wire off the distributor and verify spark or not when it was dead.
Next check for fuel. My CV23 with a 460 was sucking the fuel line shut on the tank side when the hose had some age on it and the engine compartment was warmed up.
These would be the easy things I can think of... are you talking electronic or points ignition??
I really doubt the coil is the issue, that would be to easy and they're pretty darn dependable. If you take a spare along and just plug it in when it died you'd know for sure.
