I have a BBC 454 I was wondering what electric fuel pump I should go with. I was thinking the Holley red or blue?
Sent from somewhere in Cali
-
Well, I personally don't like either. Lol
If funds permit, look at Aeromotive.
But if a choice had to be made, Holley Blue and a pressure regulator.

What should the pressure be set at? Which aeromotive and does it require a regulator?

Really depends on the set up as far as which pump.
Holley carburetors should be getting a constant 6.5psi.
I have this guy going into the Jet boat.
900 cfm on a 496.

And a relay with that blue holley!!!
-
Stay away from the Holley pumps, they are junk. Aeromotive makes a nice internally regulated pump that runs a constant 7psi. That would probably work great for that 454

What's wrong with the Holley fuel pumps? I have been running a Holley blue for 5 years with no problems

The old ones were great. For the last several years they have been made in China and are garbage.

I will look it to that today. I had a Holley blue in my last boat and it only lasted 3 months.

the Aeromotive SS pumps are very nice, but if i can make a recommendation. Get a pre-filter.
The impeller in the Aeromotive SS pump is plastic, and i have personally broken two of them
The red one in the bottom of the pic is an aeromotive one

What micron pre filter would you guys recommend.

150 micron with a magnet of you can find one. I think Raycor makes one that is also a water separator.

Thanks GT just for learning info would it be any different with running a mechanical fuel pump

IMHO, a lot different. The particulate tolerances are much greater in a mechanical pump simply because of how they work.
A mechanical diaphragm pump can almost pump mud. The limiting factor is the check, or gulp valves inside it separating the chambers. Once they get fouled, they get weaker and weaker until they hang partially open.
An electric typically has very tight mechanical tolerances and the smallest bit of hard material can lock then up solid.

I bought this fuel filter. Now just need the fuel pump next. I sometimes wish I was spending this money on a whole different boat.

The amount of horsepower that your engine has will determine how much fuel flow is required to support that engine. As horsepower increases so does the volume of fuel required to support that power. A good estimator of volume to power is approximately 10 hp per gallon or 2.64 hp per liter. For example if your pump flows at 50 gph it should be able to support a 500 hp engine (50 x 10 = 500). However, to actually know the gph you must also consider the fuel pressure required for your engine

That, and you cant go off of the ratings on these pumps. They are not accurate once you add in your hoses, fittings, etc.

My Olds : I'll be using stock(upgraded Mondello pump)mechanical fuel pump w/ a Summit regulater and Holley d/P line kit.
That 1st pic is Bunger's inn-gine......soo sweet. (Hope he's not pissed for using it)I think.
Second is mine that I'll use one of these days.Life's getting in the way tho.
-
That white gauge in the first pic is water temp?
-
My engine does not have. A mechanical fuel pump

I believe that's Bunger's engine. That's an oil pressure auxiliary oil pressure gauge.
-
My hat is off to you guys who could afford the prices of these pumps and filters. You must have 7 figure incomes.
-

The white face gauge was a water pressure gauge I was using to get my relief valve dialed. Bottom gauge is a mechanical oil pressure and top is fuel pressure. The water pressure was just temporary

No 7 figures here. Not even half lol
I saved 3 checks to buy mine and even then summit gave me credit for the a aeromotive I was returning

Mount the pump where it won't get wet. I used to run a blue holley. First one failed (leaked) after a season and a half. Second one also failed but half way through season. This time I decided to take it apart. There is a tiny hole on the body. Water got in through there and rusted the shaft just behind that hole. The rust on the shafts ate up the seal. It's probably what caused the first one to leak too. Ruined my day both times. I will never run one in a boat ever again. Now I have mechanical. No switch, wiring, or relay to fail. Good luck.

Have a picture of your regulator? If it's same as mine it'll have a 3/16" Allen bolt with a jam nut. You turn in or out to adjust pressure then tighten the jam nut again

Yep, loosen the jam nut, and the Allen stud is the adjuster.
It might be realitively close out of the box. I use my gauge off that port right on the side
