IMHO, a lot different. The particulate tolerances are much greater in a mechanical pump simply because of how they work.
A mechanical diaphragm pump can almost pump mud. The limiting factor is the check, or gulp valves inside it separating the chambers. Once they get fouled, they get weaker and weaker until they hang partially open.
An electric typically has very tight mechanical tolerances and the smallest bit of hard material can lock then up solid.
