Head bolts

Can I buy bolts from a hardware store and use them for my head bolts? As long as they are same size, thread, n pitch? And grade 8? Or do they have to be actual "head bolts"

Use GM/Ford (OEM) or ARP's...cheap Insurance

Need a set or just 1 or 2? What Motor?

head bolts are a "torque to yield" bolt. they stretch accordingly to get a PROPER torque rating and hold things together. you use them ONCE and then you throw them away for another set. a home depot grade 8 bolt should NOT be used. not to mention most home depot bolts are china junk. id imagine you couldnt even get them to 100+ ft/lbs without them snapping.

Okay cool. Yeah I didn't wanna risk it. So I bought some oem ones. Hopefully new valve seals and head gasket and intake gets rid of my water and oil mixture

Sorry for tread jacking but I have a question I'm putting my heads back on a 454 Chevy and normally I would dip my head bolts in oil befor I install them do still do that when the bolts are into the water jackets do I put some type of sealent on them instead of oil thanx for any input

I've got a few ARP stud kits laying around...haven't been torqued but once or twice. If you're running iron heads, they'll work. $40 shipped.

The bolts that go into water jackets need to be sealed. My favorite is Toyota black FIPG (dealer only)..or permatex ultra black (secondary choice). Do not use use "thread sealer"...it's for tapered pipe threads.
