Headers

So I am not sure if its possible but one of my projects that I have going on has some Rewarder Headers and the chrome is chipping off. My question is can they be re-chromed. And if they can what would be the best thing to do? Should I send them back to Rewarder (if they would re-chrome) or do I take them to any ole chrome shop?

Unless you're dead set on chrome your other choice would be to have them ceramic coated.

Because of the chemicals used in the chroming process it's getting hard to find chrome shops and the cost is usually more than the part is worth.

I'm not dead set on chrome. I just want them to look better then they do. Plus if you happen to touch them its like a damn razor. I have cut myself on them already and I have never had the boat in the water. Lol.

I will check out other options. I was also looking into powder coating. So if anyone has any pictures or advice on that process it would be helpful.

If you decide to go the coating route, check out Embee Performance Coatings in Santa Ana.

I'm sure you'll find a lot of their work on the boats around here.

Powder coating is probly the cheapest route they would strip the chrome off shoot the powder on bake it and through a chemical reaction coat those bad boys.

Ok so I heard back from Rewarder this morning and they told me that the chrome shop will re-chrome them for $350 with no guarantee. Why would they say No Guarantee?

Does anyone know what it would cost to do Powder?

Powder coat will be half as much

They most likely don't wanna guarantee some old headers especially not knowing what state the metal is. If the foundation isn't great no one can promise it'll stay stuck on there.

See if you can tell the condition of the primary tubes after the water injection. Mine are blued, and thin in this area. I'd hate to see ya have a set of good looking headers, then a blow-out.

Thanks Daniel. I didn't even think about that. I guess that's why I ask the experts on here.

I'm going with Powder if everything is ok with the headers.

Not powder coat. Make sure ceramic coated. Unless you want to burn off all the powder.

Well two days ago I just sent mine back.. Black ceramic coated headers. They look like shit. They looked like barbecue paint. Scratches all over them and dents!!!! Bran new rewarder headers can't tell you who did it. UPS or a bad pair of headers. By the time I get a new pair I'm just going Crome. Not even out of the box

Scratches all over the pipes... The good thing is Rewarder Headers stand by their pipes and exchanged them for me.

Don't powder coat them either re chrome them at El Monte plating they do great work or u can have young gun coating in Rancho Cucamonga ceramic coat them.

Why have I heard that there is a high temp powder coating that will not burn off.

Have you used El Monte Plating? Are their prices reasonable? I would much rather have them chromed.

When I had mine re-chromed (about 15 years ago), the shop said they had to paint in between the primary tubes.
They said they can't buff or polish in between so they use hi-temp paint.
I'm not familiar with the chroming process, so I don't know how true that is.

Ceramic coating seems to be the preferred way to go because it's supposed to help keep the headers much cooler.
I read somewhere that they can also ceramic the inside of the headers.

I have read good things about Young Guns.
Embee comes highly recommended, Jeff ( goes by Tiki on the Perfomance Boats forums).

El Monte will clean all that up before they re chrome them. Any place that does it for you wether it be chrome or ceramic coating should chemically clean them before applying the new finish to them.

There is hi temp powder that wants to act like ceramic coat but it still burns off. Just ceramic coat them and be done. The coating is inside and outside. It helps tubes run cooler too. Lasts 5-7 years , just make sure motor not too lean.
