i couldnt imagine have turbos in a boat that i wanted to use all the time.
Why would you make a statement like that?
I personally ran a 505 cubic inch turbo engine in a 20 foot Schiada that was used for ski racing (both marathons and sprints), as well as being used for weekends at Parker. Granted, it was not a pump gas engine,, ran 15 lbs boost, but it was completely trouble free for 6 years until I finally sold the boat. The boat was sold less engine, and I freshened up the engine before I sold it, but was amazed to see that nothing actually needed replacement,,, rings and bearings would have continued to run for a long time.
Back to the original question, you would not run a "high compression" engine on pump gas and expect good results. You need to decide what is most important to you, power or budget. Forced induction engines will cost considerably more (mostly due to the added cost of blower or turbos), but set up properly they should be completely reliable and yield more power.
