Ok maybe i counted wrong because searching for starters for 169 teeth flex plate is not working..i only see 168 tooth starters?

A freaken mess....i started the " starter sounds like it disengaging to early" thread got all kinds of great input tried a buch and still nothing..its almost to me like the starter does bolt up close enuf to flex plate.

Flexplate is a heavy sheet metal disc with holes on it that has the ring welded to it, (used on an automatic transmission). A flywheel is constructed of cast iron (used on a manual transmission), much heavier and has the ring shrunk to it. It sounds like you either have a bent (taco shaped) flexplate or a flywheel with the ring misplaced.

Has it always done this?

It sounds to me like the ring on the flywheel is too far rearward, on a top starter motor, the ring gear gets moved toward the rear of the flywheel.

The flywheel would need to be removed and the ring heated up and flipped around and reinstalled back on the flywheel toward the front edge.

You could test this theory by removing the bendix shims from the starter and see if it improves, but it will not fix it, it will only get better.


I would pull the motor loose and set it on blocks in the boat and remove the flywheel and check it out. You can leave the motor hooked to fuel and electrical so you can test it before getting everything back together..

If you look at the nose housing of the starter where the Bendix slides back and forth on the shaft, you will see a funny looking bushing at the end toward the very nose of the starter, there are typically a couple of shims on there to limit how far the Bendix moves toward the starter.

Do you have a way to get a picture of the bendix that has been trying to start the boat? It may show signs of how far it engages.

The only time they need to be shimmed is when the re-manufacturing company refaces the drive assembly.

You should have .020" to .030" clearance between the gear faces with the Bendix engaged.

You can check this with a paper clip between the teeth with the gear engaged. The easiest way to engage the teeth is with the solenoid pulled from the starter and you can simply pull on the plunger moving the Bendix into the gear.
