Mag ?????????
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:06:37 PM »
If a mag has been sitting, will it need to be rebuilt just from sitting?
I put a plug in it and took the screw gun to it and it gave me , 2 full stack amps, a PA system, lights and literally my ass a damn good zap.
If that means anything  :-\

actually just thinking about your mag more and more. to me it sounds like the mag is complete shit and you should sell it. mags are expensive to rebuild and are not good for anything. so as a favor to you i will come by and pick it up for double the SCJB.com price ;D, in cash of course .

I'm new to the world of mags and i read somewhere that the magnets over time lose their strength and need to be replaced, regardless if its been in use or sitting. anyone have any factual information to back this up?

The reason being is that I have a mag being delivered today by the brown man. the story on it is that the guy bought it brand new 10+ years ago and has only used it twice to start up an alcohol motor project, but was never driven. Ming is weeks away and i'm not sure if i have time to fight with it, send it out to get refreshed, and then get it back in the boat for testing.

good topic omar.....hope you dont mind i piggyback on it.

If it was built with rare earth magnets, then yeah, they will lose their strength over time. But more like 1000 years, not 10. Other magnets I cannot post on, as I don't know.

I suggest you have Omar hold onto #1 and spin it with a drill and see if he lights up. He apparently likes it! lol.

Have it rebuilt if you want, but knowing what's inside those things, you're good to go, BOTH of you!

its a mallory sprint mag, i dont know the specs, but i think i read that only the sprint mags III and IV have the earth magnets in them.

the question im getting at is that just because it creates a spark (or shock in this case) does that mean its 100% good? is this a case where it either works or it doesnt, or can it work, but not generating enough power because it needs to be freshened up.

Since mine is a Hunt mag , I decided to call over there and see what he says .
I told him it gave me a good zap and at what point do I need to send it in for servicing.
He said run it  ;D
If the motor runs like crap , it will definatly need a tune up.
He told me what to set the gap at and to give it a once over with a points file.
Not to mention a tune up would not be more than $150 .

Not familiar with the Mallory SprintMag's, nor the Hunt. The ones I have are all 3 Vertex. I assumed they were all built with rare earth magnets (Hence Magneto, sounds like false advertising if they used substandard materials in some), and yeah, Omar, a little cleaning up might be in order, but a rebuild? Not necessary unless it isn't working at all or is erratic.

Terry would be the one to ask about the Mallory I think he's running one, or Crewcheif, he's built and run many a sprint car running them.. As far as the Hunt, you heard it from the horses mouth Omar.

Good luck guys with them! I think you'll be happier than with the digital dealios on your race machines!

The only experience I have with sprint cars &/or magnitos is from the stands.  Thanks for the vote of confidence though.

Well, I guess that makes an open forum then. I buy Vertex when I see them only because I know it's top shelf stuff. If what Brad says is true, the Mallory won't hold a candle to it. Apparently, Terry musta saw this too, but when I last saw the boat, it had a Mallory unit on it.

I'm waiting on someone to chime in with more info, this perplexes me.

The Hunt unit you have, Omar, I know nothing about, but if it knocked you on your a$$, I'd just run it!

Just got off the phone with Zig- he said to  make sure you clean the living shit out of the points and lube the cam & shaft with POINT LUBE, nothing else. You should be good to go according to him. If you really need to get it serviced, he can do it in a week or so if  absolutely needed.

ok, there are a few different kinds of Mags. One the type you guys are getting into, Hunt and Vertex donot carry external "transformers", not coils. The MSD and Mallory do use transformers. The MSD Promag has had two transformers available, one was the regular box and the other is the "endurance" box. Msd has dropped the regular box and only offers the endurance box, designed to be run for longer intervals. They say they over heat after a while, I'[ve known people to run a Vertex in there boat and not be able to touch it after a while. I run an MSD now w/ transformer and revlimmiter. I was running a Sprintmag I, whick I might add has been in the boat since it was new, '82. I changed Mags because I got the MSD ($1345) for $150, not counting the box, cap & rotor, wires and hold down. I when I got the boat it had been sitting for about 6 yrs the told me. When I got into it at home, no spark. I went all thru the internet including Zigs to find someone to go thru it, After all the I looked at the mag, had a sticker on it that said, "point gap .016". So I cleaned the points and set 'em at .016 and BOOOYA, spark been runnin eversince. I learned thru all that that some old mags have magnets that need to be recharged....like every season, must most mags around today have the "rare earth" magnets and dont need to be recharged. A few other things a guy should know if running a mag is, NO resister wires or plugs and gap the plugs at .018-.020. Also a good heavy duty ground switch is needed, this is the only control you have on the mag, you ground 'em to kill 'em. These things make more juice the faster you turn 'em but at startup, 250 RPMs minimum, you barely got juice so close the plug gap down a little to get the candle lit. Remember NO resistance in plugs and wires it requires the mag to produce more zap ansd overheats them. Hope theat helps and if anyone has any questions....fell free.
