I recently had to purchase one of these Mallory Magneto Start Assist Boxes blindly. No one could tell me if it would remedy my problem, if they are worth a damn, what was involved with installing it. When ordering it from a distributor (like Summit Racing or Jegs) or directly from Mallory, the part's description says nothing at all or the following:
Boost magneto output with stronger spark, even at very low cranking RPM. Electronically connects the magneto ignition system to the engine's starter solenoid. Magneto Ignition System modifications required.
I have the Mallory SprintMag. My problem wasnt that I had low cranking RPM's, but that it sometimes fires right away, other times it takes 5-10 minutes of cranking to get it to finally fire. Once it fires, it runs great.
What my main concern was that it says the Magneto has to be modified to install it. According to a few posts on Mallorys knowledge base, it must be sent into mallory for the modifications. I searched high and low online looking for information as to what these modifications were, but no one could tell me. I called Mallory and told me I had to talk to a specific person as he was the only one who knew about them, and of course, this guy was NEVER available. Finally, after a few days of calling, I finally got the guy on the phone and he was very dismissive and just "oh yeah, its easy, theres instructions and you can do it yourself".
Mallory Magneto Start Assist Box Part # 660

I got the start assist box and the instructions were simple and the modifications were very minor. And also, it resolved my issue. The motor fires right up on first crank every time.
Well, here's the mysterious instructions that are not posted anywhere online. Not even on Mallorys site. I hope that someone finds this via a google search or something and finds this information useful. The instructions state that you can wire this Start Assist Box with a Mallory Super-Mag II, Super-Mag III, Super-Mag IV, SprintMag & Sprint Mag II Magneto Ignition Systems.
Here is the Box....its pretty small.

And it comes with this small bag of hardware

Here is the Basics:
The box has 3 wires (Yellow, Black and Green).
Yellow goes to the Yellow wire from the Mag.
Black goes to the ground on the Coil.
Green goes to the starter solenoid.
The modification mentioned above just removes a ground point from inside the mag. Here are the before and after pictures of how I modified mine.
