I have a 454 with a milodon pan on it with a windage tray built into it. When I took my motor apart to rebuild it I noticed it had another windage tray mounted off the bearing caps. Is it normal to run 2 or the one built into the pan is all you need?

That thing mounted on your main bearings might be a crank scraper.

The one built into the pan should be all you need.

Well if it's not a windage tray it dosent really matter because it is junk, the broken rod ruined it along with my block

What I have done is to use a flat windage tray in my trap door Dooley pan and make sure there is a 3/8" gap all around the pan circumference....

The tray I have is louvered. It works totally bitchen' and has been up a river for 38 miles averaging about 5,000 RPM with absolute zero problems.

Gets done more often than you think.

Generally, a good oil pan with an integral windage tray ought not require another windage tray fastened to the main bolts.  However, you should also know that the 454 and 460 Milodon jet boat pans seem to have hit-and-miss issues with oil pressure behavior (depending on engine combo in which they are used, etc). And so it is possible that the second tray was added in order to address persistent windage/oil pressure problems even though the Milodon should have taken care of any unusual symptoms by itself.  I'm not saying that this is automatically the reason why you found two windage trays in your engine, just saying it should be considered in your particular case.

Im not for sure but that looks like a stock gen. 5/6 pan that someone added a full sump to it.  My old 502 crate motor came with a pan and small windage tray that looked just like that ....minus the extended sump.
The dip stick tube is also kind of a give away......looks just like the OEM one.

It might just be the picture, cause i can't see the front of the pan. How the hell is oil supposed to get to in to the front of the pan? ( the extended sump) with exception of the small hole (top of 2nd pic.) in the top of the old kick up. If its not open somewhere else that's still just a 6qt. pan.

I figured out that it is a stock pan with added capacity. You cant see it in the pick but there are holes in the bottom of the original pan to let the oil in. Looks like it should work. We will definitely be keeping an eye on the oil pressure etc.
