I could easily be wrong here....but can't you have too large of a return line??? I thought like a -4 was about right.
Bigger the better for the most part, you dont want the returned fuel to be under pressure....
If it were mine, I would run the return to just before the fuel pump inlet, the reason is no worries where the fuel goes and you only have to filter the fuel once...
Just me though. Bypass regulators are worth the effort if you don't mind the extra plumbing...
