I have a 10quart oil pan but no bung for a sender can I use a port in the filter housing ? Or?

For oil temperature, not oil pressure,right?

I have seen T's at oil pressure sender. Also at pan if you want sump temp. You really worried about Olds oil temp? Might be interesting to watch though. I've been using Oldsmobile motors for nigh on 40 yrs and never had oil temp gauges. Yeah, might be interesting.

I've got an olds with a oil temp gauge and I've got up to 300. In the process of putting a cooler on it now

There's the 455's oil pressure sending unit location,in front of engine.  One is T'd to pressure gauge. Simply to wire a temp gauge instead of pressure. Pan bung much more accurate for sure fairly easy if not installed. Likewise for filter adapter.

There's no flow there, it's a dead end. The oil pressure can be taken anywhere,  the temperature must be in the path of flow. The filter adapter is ideal if not in the pan.

Most adapters are drilled for a sender for pressure. Use that for temp.

My opinion, do it right and weld a bung onto the pan...

Sure it may take time to do it right, but you want oil temp for a reason. So might as well do it right the first time!

To each their own... My intent was to be understood as take your time and don't do a hack to try and get it to work. Didn't want to offend anyone by my post, sorry of I did.

No offense taken.  Ever.  Just curious why it is everyone thinks in  the pan is the ticket,  truth is,  in the oil path is a good indication of actual "usable" oil temperature.

Just an opinion. That's all.

The oil filter is the absolute first thing to get oil from the pan.

My belief, I think that the pan holds the bulk of the oil and therefore should give the best average of temperature. + or -

Why accept an average when the real temperature of the oil serving the bearings is available?

That's all I'm saying, I doubt the bearings care if there is 30°F cooler oil somewhere in the pan.

GT sir,it's hard to tell my "pink'd,almost scared" arms,fingers and belly that port is a dead end. It's hotter than jell. It would register on any heat gauge. As per Berkeley instructions,changed many a oil change at that  port,it's HOT! Dead end it is, a hot dead end. As stated the adapter or pan bung is more accurate for sure. Easy if uninstalled.
