Olds 455 oil pressure issue?
« on: July 21, 2016, 02:55:19 AM »
Im new to jet boats but not new to the olds 350/455. I have read everything here about the oiling issues so ive been really careful with my new boat and its BBO. My question is this...when will i experieince a drop in oil pressure? and at what pressure am i not safe? Ive ran the boat as hard as itll go and watched the gauge like a hawk and its never dropped below 40. I dont have my tach hooked up but I can say if the water is smooth ive got my foot all the way down and use the diverter to trim it down right until it stops porpousing...im not saying im trying to blow it but I just cant seem to find the problems that people talk about on the forum?

Welcome to The Forum Billy machete. You should get your tachometer fixed. You'll notice a drop in oil pressure when your engine bearings start going South. Good luck and until that happens have fun with it.

The problem with the Oldsmobile as I am sure you have read is the oil system simply moves more oil than what can return quick enough to keep the pan supplied with enough oil to keep the pump happy.  (Paraphrasing in a major way here).

Some tricks to slow the oil to the top end are essential to keeping things under control.

I'll get into it more later. But without a tachometer reading,  your pissing towards the wind. Lol,  the Olds really begins to struggle above about 4,800-5k rpm.

That Oldsmobile can be made to run plenty fast. Just depends how much money you have and how fast you want to go. Chevy is the same way.

When u are driving and u get on it just watch your oil pressure when u go low u just slow down and let it build back up and the Cruze bro in less u have a built olds u don't want to push it very long or u will pop the motor  between 4000 and 4600 is the sweet spot for and olds motor

You said your motor never drops below 40. That's great it's possible you've had some oil restrictions done to the motor. Pushrod restrictors , Cam Bearing restrictors, lifter bore restrictors , head and engine deck modifications and maybe some drain back lines.

If you run it that hard like you say and never noticed any fluctuating oil pressure then your good. Yes that's been said Oldsmobiles don't like to run much over 4900 RPM for long periods.

To hold 40 to 50 psi in a 455 olds u need good bearing clearances

Consistent bearing clearances are key. High main bearing speeds on BBO's. I run cam bearing restrictions, verified bearing clearances ( .0005" additional, so around. 0029-.0031") and HV oil pump, and 12qt pan.
