Do you have a flat tappet cam shaft? If you do, while your at it pull all the rocker arms and pushrods, intake manifold and check everything out. Check the pushrods for straightness, rocker arms for wear or damage and lifters for broken parts. When you put it back together, install a rev kit (this only applies to flat tappet cams).
What you did was float the valves like Ralph says.
Do it enough times and you will spit a pushrod and cause all sorts of havoc.
The Rev kit will keep the lifters in their perspective bores and keep the oil pressure in the engine until you can shut it down safely.
