Pulled the motor suprise !

Decided to yank my ford 460 from my boat just purchased it and noticed the rear of the bell housing was leaking, figured it would be a freeze plug but to my suprise the block was cracked!

I just want a quick boat to cruise this summer at havasu , would I be better looking for a new block and swapping everything over ?

I figure getting it welded would probably not fix the issue at all either ?

I have welded them before, use nickle rod and a good stick welder, the crack should be drilled on the ends and valley-ed out to a v.. Chances are, this is probably not the only crack though.

That sucks...

Good thing 460's aren't rare...

I don't know if this would help you any, but I had a buddy that had a crack in the block, leaking water and he got it welded and it ran fine no problems and still holding up today. Since there's not a ton of pressure it should hold up until you could get a new block.

I suppose it's better to build a new fresh engine than to run a unknown engine without previous history or maintenance like this one . 😕

But putting in perspective, a $5 welding rod could make it run for ten years....

Like gt jet stated someone mentioned to me that welding procedure but my question is is it worth the risk and will it hold up or crack again. It has a panther pump to a T to the wp housing and exits the t stat housing and out the EM thunder manifold, wonder if too much pressure caused this or lack of winterization ?

I can get u used short blocks here in socal for $ 500 snapped my crank and had to pick up one for my chevy. Was nice but i bored it and polished crank just In case.

My Olds did the same thing when I got, cracked from freeze plug to freeze plug. The boat was always garaged, so it was probably just water left in the block and the freeze plugs didn't do their job. I ended up getting another block and putting most of the old stuff that was still good and some fresh machining into it.

Did the engine run before you bought it? If so it might be worth trying to weld it up and see how it goes. I don't know how much you'd have to tear into it, but if it were to work, it would probably be the cheapest.

Just really depends on your funds. Good Luck.

Little tidbit...

Freeze plugs aren't really freeze plugs. They are technically called Welch plugs. No manufacturer in history has ever stated they would protect the block or anything else from splitting during a hard freeze.

The block is toast I pulled the heads off just now the cylinder walls are scorched as if the wrist pin came out looks like a old rebuild the pistons looks fairly new but one of the scorches also cracked the cylinder wall which explains the milkshake. Water was leaking out of the.block while cylinder 1 was sucking it in trough the cylinder wall crack. I suppose some boats do stand for Bust Out Another Thousand.

And yes the engine did run they claimed it leaked fuel and it fired up good oil pressure but this motor is toast
