Pushrod selection

Hey guys, Im finally about done with my engine. I just have a few questions about selecting the right pushrods.

First off, how can I tell if my engine is a tall deck or not. Second of all, it is a stock block and stock heads, nothing has been decked to my knowledge. So what im wondering, what are the stock lengths for pushrods for a 454 BBC, and what would you guys recommend i use? i was looking at some of the comp cams hi tech pushrods, but before I order them I need to make sure that I get teh right ones.

BTW, I would look at my old pushrods but they got thrown away accidently.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have to assume that you merely put rings and bearings in the engine, otherwise you would have gotten into having to know what parts you were dealing with to make sure you bought the right parts? The casting number on the block would help verify.

Regardless of standard or tall deck,, changing the cam and rockers means you should measure for correct pushrod length. I have some stockers you could borrow to see how the geometry is. If it wasn't freshly assembled and clean I would say bring the whole thing and I would help you make sure you get the correct length.

Don't order any push rods tell you have them indexed for length, Do you have roller rockers, different cam ?? Email me you number and I will call you. If we can do them at my old shop in riverside, Glen Avon no cost to you only takers a little time I will be in at my home there for short time email me smith60600@yahoo.com and I will call you have all the tools to check push rod length with me. pluss Terry Manton makes all my push rods and he is in Elsinore by the lake has built my push rod for over 25 years

Fwiw, I have a set of bbc pusrods layin around, I had to buy new ones because I bought a tall block. Pm me if your interested. The donor was a 427 with dimple rods and 990's, not sure how many different bbc pushrods are out there?

Good info here Bro, '429" will help you chose the correct length via precision measuring , valve train geometry is critical !take advantage of this mans great knowledge and knows his Sh*t ! Tom

im running a clay smith hydraulic flat tappett cam, and the crane gold race series 1.7 rockers. I looked up the casting number for the block and the info is as follows: 1972-78 454 215, 235, 240, 270, 2 bolt, car & truck

Ok,, so it is a standard deck block.

As I mentioned above, I would be happy to help you check pushrod length also if you bring it here (Glendora), but you would need to figure out how to seal it up for the trip so you don't get a bunch of dirt in it.

While it's possible that stock length pushrods may work, you should check rather than just sticking them in and assuming they will be ok.
