Rochester Quad. Carb Idle Issue
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:29:25 PM »
I'm hoping GT or someone can point me in the right direction here. I have a 1995 202xr with the standard MP 454/Dominator Jet. My issue is that when I decelerate, the idle will stick at 2000 rpms or higher (seems to happen more often in  extremely hot weather). If I tap on the accelerator pedal a couple of times it will drop back down to 900-1000 rpms.  Obviously I checked (and lubricated) the foot pedal, cable, and linkage...no issues there. Last weekend while at Parker I even went to Napa and added a return spring to no avail.
I've come to the conclusion that I should probably replace the original quadrajet with an Edelbrock 1409 or 1410.
Any suggestions/ideas?

Quadrajet is a good carb when tuned properly. I'd rebuild and run it. JMO

The Edelbrock is 1/3 the carburetor the Quad is.  JMO.

How are your throttle shafts? Do they wiggle?

Your throttle linkage looks whack. Did you swap it?

The throttle linkage is stock...I thought.  Just pick this boat up in Canyon Lake in April.  I haven't messed with the linkage other than lub and the tacky return spring.  As for throttle shafts wiggling, I'll definitely check that out tomorrow.  Sounds like the quadrajet is worth rebuilding which I'm actually glad to hear.

I can pull the carb and drop it off for the rebuild GT if that is the diagnosis.

I don't care for the way the cable end looks, it looks like it's mounted too close to the carb.. Not coming out and calling it "wrong", but something looks McFunky.

When you say you tap the throttle to get it to return to idle, are you saying that it is a linkage issue?  The linkage should snap back closed quickly when released.

Be careful adding additional/stiffer springs.  Too much spring pressure can actually bend the throttle shafts/linkage.

The cables are not intended to be lubricated.  I find that usually gums them up.   It's probably time for a new cable.

Looking at the side picture, the throttle shafts look like they may be toast, I see a raw fuel trail on the intake.... The linkage bracket needs to move forward, it looks to ,me like the cable end can bottom out.

That's just it,  checked the linkage return with the wife driving and it returns properly.  Honesty I don't know why tapping the accelerator a couple of times corrects the idle.  Doesn't happen at Elsinore in 80 degree weather, more so at the river in ♨ weather.  That's why I was thinking internal carb issue. I'll remove the spring tomorrow as it didn't help at all.  Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the quick replies Gents!  The throttle shafts don't wiggle, but it seems as though my problem is the spring on the secondary throttle shaft.  As suggested I'll rebuild this off season.

You might want to pull the throttle cable off the carb. Then check to see (by hand) if the throttle plates are being held open. Common problem is people over tighten those carbs. They then have a tendency to have the plates hang up. Do the check once you have some heat in the motor. I cannot tell you how many i have seen that needed work to them for this reason. Even to the point where the secondary would not open. Hope it helps.

Wouldn't have thought of that. I definitely will check the throttle plates. Once again thanks for the advice!
