ok heres my problem 454 10.1 comp tunnel ram dual 650 dubble pumps.wet stacks berk pump ab stanless impeller 19ft tahiti low profile hull semi pro grate,can not get over 4200 rpm 50 mph.ready to shoot this piece of wonderful crap.need input trying to get back to or close to 6000 rpm .this thing is giving me a headace

Whats your timing at ?
Are you sure the carbs are opening up completly?
Are you getting any, enough, or the correct amount of fuel pressure?
Are you getting too much fuel at WOT?

Try trouble shooting things one at a time like a check list .
The fact that it runs tells you something is not happening in the upper RPM's

timming is at 20 base has crane ing 36 carbs open all the way fuel pressure is 6psi wide open.the only thing different from last year is the pump went from a panther to a berk built and swap by jbp

Were the carbs freshened up at all.
They could have gotten fugged up from sitting .

cleaned up new fuel line filters all readjusted.should have left the darn panther in it and just re ringed and new bearings every year from the 6500 rpms at least i was at 63 mph then

How many hours are on the motor?, Is it at all possible the timing chain slipped, who installed the engine? JBP?

What else has changed? Does it rev out of the water?

Baby steps bro, gonna be something dumb, guarantee it...

Your timing is set at 20 base? Isn't a BBC's timing supposed to be around 10 deg. before tdc? Giving it about 32 deg. total.

Most mechanical advance in the distributor is good for 20 degrees with an initial setting of 13-16 for a total of 33-36 degrees.

Double check the timing with a dial back type timing light. Also check your balancer to make to see if the outer ring has slipped (bring it up to TDC #1 and see if the timing mark is at TDC)

Typical mechanical advanced is only good for about 12*-20* delta, on a car, the vacuum advance is good for another 12*...

hard to start and takes for ever to get plained out .kick it up to 20 runs great just wont spin past 4200.

You'd be surprised! Best thing is get the cam degree'd. Willing to agree with GT, sounds like cam timing out quite a bit. If cam timings out, lord knows what ignition timing is adding to the mix.

You can get offset keys. Does no good without a degree wheel and a dial indicator.

Run it again with a vacuum guage, bet it has low vacuum...

I have made this "boo boo" before (Skip, that would ba a mistake

) probably either off a tooth or on the wrong key slot...

A cheating way to check on the slipped harmonic balancer would be to keep bumping the timing a couple degrees until she knocks...If the cam timing is dust it will ping right away...

First, and Tom will chime in here eventually I'm sure since he built and installed the jet, Sounds to me like you have way too much impeller for the HP you have.IN addition to other issues, ie cam timing.

Dunno where your HP curve is at, but if you plan to run the boat at 6000 RPM , and that's where it's max HP is at, and you have, say 500HP, you should be running a C impleller.

This is info I gathered from Tom, correct me if I'm wrong guys.

IMHO You have bigger issues in that timing set change tho.

X2, unless that 454 has some serious nads, 6000 is a lot of rpm on an AB, I've turned a BC at 5800 RPM and it was a dyno verified 680+/- HP at 5500 RPM with the mufflers in on race gas, how worn was the old pump?

Trying to be constructive, not condisending, hopefully not read wrong...Jack and Coke both have bad attitudes....

rember it was a panther i spun it over 7000 with no prob.could not get rpms down now i cant get them back up rpms that is. might have to have tom cut it down or go real crazy with this dang bbc.any one have any steroids for my bbc
