Title: The Big Debate - Ford Vs. Chevy
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on May 02, 2007, 12:39:43 PM
After reading some heated threads on here and some falsified information exchanges, I think its time to run a Poll and a discussion about which is better for Jet Boat application.

I will be strictly moderating this thread, so don?t get upset if I edit your post or even delete it. This thread will be strictly technical information. Anything that doesn?t belong will be edited or removed. Please use solid facts, not just something you heard from your 2nd cousin?s dog sitter.

If you don?t have anything of value to add to the debate, please don?t post.

As a Ford enthusiast, one thing that I will never dispute or debate at this particular time is that "it is a chebby world in which we live" and the Ford is the underdog.  With that in mind, adding a poll to this thread has nothing to do with a "debate," and it plainly makes this thread a popularity contest which the chebby with no doubtedly win.  If you want a popularity contest, keep the poll; if you want a friendly debate, kill it.

Point taken, but I dont think it will influence the debate. If your facts are strong enough, maybe you can even bend people over to the Fords.

I am a perfect example. I am on the fence when it comes to fords and chevys. I have yet to develope an opinion of my own. I just dont feel like I have enough facts to lean either way, thus why I created this thread.

The only thing that is pushing me towards anything is the fact I am distantly related to a key engineer to Henry Ford, so I have Ford in my blood, and heritage is important to me.

Well based on parts availability price to build and base power I am all Chevy. I dont see hardly any 460 parts in summit or Jegs and when I do come across them they usually cost more. Same with passenger vehicles. Go to AutoZone or Napa and ask for a 350 waterpump he will go grab one and ask for around $45.00. Now ask for a 351 waterpump he will probably have to order it and its at least 40% more. In the threads I read alot of 460 issues and I have hauled in alot of 460's off the lake and only a few 454's. Also 460's are 2 bolt main's

Chevy parts are everywhere, if the boat breaks down I can crawl under the hood of a ? 1976 Nova 4 door ? and odds are that I can use almost anything under that hood to get me home.

Chevy's are cheaper to build and easier to build - but are they? What If I want to build a Chevy 540 ci stroker motor? I have to clearance the block, I have to use a tall deck block, maybe even some re-configuring on the valvetrain... On a 460 Ford the valve train/cam location is not an issue, the block will almost never have to be clearanced (from what I've overheard), better and better...

So I guess if I want to build a reliable, cheap (parts), everyday duty or semi-hot engine for my jet boat I'll go Chevy, but if you're building a blown 540 ci+++ you may want to go with a Ford because it's a better design for the application in which it will be used.

...based on parts availability price to build and base power I am all Chevy.
"BASE" power comes easier with the Ford 460 and costs less than a 454 specifically for that reason.  Stock parts plus nothing more than an aftermarket cam kit can net 500HP NA if you really know what you are doing.  The chebby will require a greater number of aftermarket parts to get there and anywhere above.

I dont see hardly any 460 parts in summit or Jegs and when I do come across them they usually cost more.
1) It's a chebby world and advertising costs a lot of money.  Why spend big bucks advertising Ford 460 parts when the majority of your sales are going to be 454 chebby parts?  This is why you don't see the Ford parts listed...but the fact remains that there plenty of aftermarket Ford 460 pistons (Probe, Ross, Diamond, Speed-Pro, Venolia, BRC, JE, SRP, etc) just like chebby.  Same with rods (SCAT, Eagle, CAT, Oliver, Carillo, Crower, any aluminum, etc), forged and cast steel crankshafts (american and/or offshore), blocks (OEM, Ford  Motorpsort, C&C, Eliminator [5 versions]), any flat tappet, roller, billet cam you can dream up, over 25 different aftermarket aluminum head options, etc. Pushrods, bearings, gaskets, valve covers, rocker arms and studs, whatever, it's all out there.  2) And the bottom line cost of using those parts for a given HP number ain't no more than a 454.

Same with passenger vehicles. Go to AutoZone or Napa and ask for a 350 waterpump he will go grab one and ask for around $45.00. Now ask for a 351 waterpump he will probably have to order it and its at least 40% more.
I don't purport to be a Ford guy as much as I am a 460 enthusiast so I wouldn;t know about small block parts.  Besides, this is a boat forum where we use big blocks.  With that in mind, waterpumps, oil  pumps, gaskets, etc for the big blocks seem to be priced about the same to me...certainly not a difference enough to complain about...all brand auto parts have different prices and  I bet you'll find part A or Part B being more for a Chebby or visa versa, depening on what you're looking at.

In the threads I read alot of 460 issues and I have hauled in alot of 460's off the lake and only a few 454's.
460-specific issues or common V8 engine problem issues where the 460 guys is inquiring rather than dropping his boat off at the shop and having somebody else repair it?

Also 460's are 2 bolt main's
Yeah, and they have been known to sustain 1800HP.  Try that with your lower nickel content 454 chebby block...just be sure to be wearing a bullet proof vest and a face shield before you dare attempt such a thing.

Chevy parts are everywhere, if the boat breaks down I can crawl under the hood of a ? 1976 Nova 4 door ? and odds are that I can use almost anything under that hood to get me home.
HUH? 460 carbed engines have virtually 100% parts interchangability, unlike 454 Gen 1, Mark IV, Gen this or Mark that.

I do not purport to have a lot of chebby info, but I have rebuilt/looked many chebby engines over closely and even considered a chebby when it came time to build my drag hydro.  After a thorough re-evaluation of GM's idea for a big block engine, I was evermore assured that I should absolutely run the Ford.  Chebby's are all over the map parts interchange-wise versus you saying the opposite; please correct me if I am mistaken with the following:

None of the above is true about the Ford 460.  All parts interchange between the carbureted engines except that the 1978 & earlier crankshaft will not fit the 1979 & later blocks (actually they can fit with just 20 minutes of grinding).

When I look at the chebby, I basically see GM constantly chasing poor oversight on their part and trying to recreate improvements from a truly inferior engine design...and based on archaic technology even back then.  In case you are unaware, it was chevrolet's intention to make their engines of that era as cheaply as possible and fit to do little more than what they were originally intended (passenger car use).  I think this is a big part as to why BBC's need all those aftermarket parts, while a built 460 using a combination of stock block, heads, and crank can support in excess of 600HP with a single carb and possibly 700 if you want to spin it up high like a chebby.  But the BBF does not need to be spun so high to make the power that a chebby, so it's parts will last longer, be more relaiable, not rely on so many aftermarket parts to get the HP, etc.

Chevy's are cheaper to build and easier to build - but are they? What If I want to build a Chevy 540 ci stroker motor? I have to clearance the block, I have to use a tall deck block, maybe even some re-configuring on the valvetrain... Yeah, and you can manage a 540 cube BBF with ALL stock FoMoCo parts.

So I guess if I want to build a reliable, cheap (parts), everyday duty or semi-hot engine for my jet boat I'll go Chevy.
More HP potential with the Ford; see my reply in the post above.

I grew up working on Fords. I was die hard Ford from birth! I have found that Chevy parts are cheaper and easier to attain but as has been said earlier you have to find out what Gen or mark or whatever they are. For me chevy Likwise seems harder to work on. I dont think this will ever be resolved but as far as the 2 bolt vs 4 bolt on a jet boat, does it really matter in this application? Not so much!

People go back and forth on this all the time , and I really dont know why . Availability to me means alot and well as price . Other important things to me are haveing the oil pickup in back , and the distributor in the back out of the way when your pist and throwing sh!t around , it's nice and tucked away in the back.

I was born and raised on Chevy's and one (1) ford pickup. Talking with "lakes only" one time , he almost had me goin blue oval . It is obvious there are tons of advantages to the ford and I'm sure someone with the same amount of insight on the chevy can conjure up some great info too. I almost bought a v-drive  :o with a ford  :o  :o once and didnt even stop to thing about the fact that it had a ford in it .

My point is that it is really just a toss up at that point . At what point is it really an even playing field.  How do you compare apples with oranges .

Please correct me if I'm wrong . One last thing . The "Rootin Tootin Rasberry" With a FORD ! You should get poked in the butt for even thinkin such a thing .Shame on you . >:(

-beerjet-

When's the last time you saw a '69 restored Z28 with a 460 in it?   ;D  Stay Chevrolet Brad!   ;)

Anyone, irregardless of thei knowledge, wisdom, technical expertise, or anything else who thinks that Ford's are as easy and cheap to work on as a Chevrolet needs to quit drug's pronto! Chevrolet's are more plentifull, more interchangeable (stay off drug's), than Ford's. I thought the intent of this thread was to air solid info on the Ford vs. Chevrolet debate? Not the 454 to 460 debate. I think it's great the 460's are so interchangeable, but can I take that 390 FE or whatever part and use it on my 460? No. Gen this Mark that, WTF? They used the Gen IV for ? 22 years, I can take almost anything off that '67 396 and bolt it on my 454, ditto with the 427 parts. I can take many parts off of smallblock and they'll work. If I'm building a Mark ? Chevrolet it's such a new engine I wouldn't care about the cost. You don't build a Boss 429 Mustang because it's cheap to buy and build. Gen IV's are everywhere, cheaper than cheap, Ford's I have to worry what ci it is before I can even think of swapping parts. I can't complain about the Gen or Mark things, but since we're bring up the point, how many versions of the V8 does Ford have? Exactly, no need to count there brother. Flatheads  ;D , 292, 260, 289, 351C, 351W, 351M (how many 351's do you fockin need there brother?), FE's, big block 429/460, WTF? Not talking about small block's because we're talking about boats? I thought it was a Ford vs. Chevrolet thread, do we need to stay on the 454 460 topic so that Ford has a chance to win? Besides, there's a small block post'er on this site that will smoke allmost all of the big block's on here!

LMFAO   ;D

...important things to me are haveing the oil pickup in back , and the distributor in the back out of the way...
Dude, what if the motor is in a v-drive???

But more importantly, to address your (quote above) desire to have the oil pump and distributor in the back of the engine:  bad, bad, bad engineering.  The timing chain is turning/TUGGING the cam from the front, and then the oil pump/distributor is FURTHER LOADING the cam at the rear of the block.  T-W-I-S-T that cam! While this technically is not an issue/does not come into play in most mild motors that the majority of jet boats have, the fact remains that the more HP you try to extract from your motor, the more this crappy situation comes under scrutiny.  Better to have the oil pump/dizzy drive mechanism right next to the cam chain where there is no extra torsional load on the cam from the rear-driven pump/dizzy setup.

About the oil pickup in the back/front, it's relavance is less with an oil pan that has trap doors and the bottom is sloped/angled. Racer's have been using front and rear sump engines for decades with no problems. If you've got 10 quarts of oil it's going to be difficult to starve the engine for oil no matter where the pick up is.

In a car I'd rather have the distributor in the front, in a boat it really doesn't matter to me because it is in a boat, it's going to be easily accessible in the front or the back.

I too, grew up with chevy. And I drive ford's now. But if your just going stock to stock in boats. Ford's win. Four years ago, we built two jet boats (same hull). One ford (460) and one chevy (502)  The ford would pull the chevy all day, from a dead stop. I would think that the chevy would have win. But I so wrong.  I pull that 502 out and put in a 454 blown and smoked that ford all day long. So what is better than a chevy 350? ;D

Easy solution to the debate, go to the races, river or whatever and count 'em up. I think you all know who's commin out on top. Chevys are the most popular engine in the world, thats a global opinion....end of story. Now dont get me wrong I'm all about doing your own thing, I talked to a dude the other day about building a Redfish with a flathead in it! My first flatty had a Buick in it. I had a jet just months ago with a 440 in it....I know I know....454-460....

For CHEAP HORSEPOWER,its FORD!!!!!! 514,533,or 557" easily available in any block, most 70s blocks will bore .080 or more! minimal to NO grinding to clear anything in the crankcase, cast steel Scat or Eagle kit is cheap! No cam interference problems, tall deck height,(6.7 or 6.8 rods fit easily), front oil sump easier to fit into boat, the "small port" heads out flow a BBC oval port head, (intake side)and you can put in big valves(and not necessarily 460 or other BBF valves either, hint, hint), they also have a 1.73 rocker ratio. Heads and blocks are cheaper, ARP main studs will work fine in a 2 bolt block (factory stuff) to 600 HP easily,(you MUST line hone it!),timing is more stable with dist in front(for those of you that don't use crank triggers), a larger dist gear means more stable timing too. The oiling system needs work by someone that knows what it needs, we charge about $60.00 for those mods. The Ford "Blue grommet" ignition box will operate UNDER WATER! and its spark output is great, we use it for our less than maximum effort boat motors, of any brand, and it will trigger from any bodys electronic distributor. For 500-650 HP Ford has the best bang for the buck. I have run and build all of the motors through the years, including hi-perf stroker 540+" Cadillacs! I would never take out a Ford to put in a Chevy. Look for a Ford engine tell all article in Hotboat early next year. I personally have no brand preferences, you can make anything RUN!! We have done Studebaker/Avanti motors as well as Hudson Hornets,409 Chevys and believe it or not, a fair share of hot rod forklift motors!  It is just physics and air flow. I think you could go all day on this subject.  As the daughter of a mechanic of all kinds who was solely on the Chevy side, I think it all boils down to what you put into it.  Whatever the maker it performs based on you.  If you pay attention to it and give it what it needs it will perform at it's best.   If you ignore it and just expect it to perform and maintain on it's own then you get what you get and probably complain about it.  Every motor whether it is of the same maker is different in some slight way and has different needs.  Bottom line is you decide whether it is the best or not.  Good luck with your decision.  Raised on Chevy and currently driving Ford...I have no complaints either way.

That isn't off topic brother and it's another interesting (possible) point. Hypothetically say there's a race with 5 Chevy's, 2 Ford's, and 1 Dodge. If they race 3 times and a chevy gets 1st twice and a Ford gets first once, there was a higher chance a Chevy would get more first's just because there were more Chevy's in the race. I'm not a mathmatician (or a English major) so I can't do anything else with these numbers.   :D

I stll say that if the desire is for a stroker engine, out of a common 460 or 454, then Ford is the way to go, otherwise a Chevrolet can't be beat.   ;D

Back with more facts: 454 rod ratio=1.534  460=1.716, Ford can allways have a longer rod due to the taller deck, Ford taller deck gives wider intake manafold with longer runners = more torque/midrange, but can be compensated for with larger runners for more top end, also has lesser runner angle. Chevy bore size = 4.250, Ford bore size = 4.360, that extra .110 gives less valve shrouding for better air flow, also the combustion chamber on the Chevy is about .600 WIDER than the bore! That causes major shrouding and less airflow/horsepower. There are ways around most everything, moral of the story, build what you have or want. It is a personal decision. I have a bunch of Chevys, but thats what my boats came with, except the one with the (now) 533 Ford, and one with an Olds, but then again, I build a killer Olds too.....   TIMINATOR    P.S. I took the Ford position because I felt that since there were less Ford builders, there would be less good Ford info.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who the winner will be between a semi-tired 454 Chevy and a fresh full roller 540 Ford. That has nothing to do with Ford vs. Chevy.  ;)  I'm looking forward to next year's races with a lot more Chevy's, a lot more experience, and a lot more competition in general. Who knows? By the time I get out there I might win a bottle of Patron.  :-\

I don't understand most of that but it sounds like pretty important stuff!   :D

Not talking about small block's because we're talking about boats? I thought it was a Ford vs. Chevrolet thread, do we need to stay on the 454 460 topic so that Ford has a chance to win? Besides, there's a small block post'er on this site that will smoke allmost all of the big block's on here!

Good call.  I just like engines, however under current circumstances I suppose I fall under the Ford catagory. My little 16' Bezer has a Ford 408W stroker with Victor Jr heads 11:1 full roller bla bla bla...  I was building a nice BBC for my self to go into a 20' Spectra Project (engine can be seen now installed in the Miller thread started by my dad), but then I bought the Glastron which has an original Berkeley Pack-a-jet 460.  As great as that old engine runs I'm now going to build a 429.  I gave thought to putting the BBC in it but I'd rather stick with original hardware.  my .02 -Josh

This is an interesting thread. After reading the all the tech posted by Lakes and Timinator, I'm almost ready to trade in the BBC for the Blue Oval!

It makes no difference to me, I'm a Mopar man at heart! The only reasons I'm running a BBC is that that's what motor plates came with the boat and the BBC parts are more readily available on the used market. The Mopar stuff is alot harder to find and a bit more costly. I have a '69 440 core stashed and keep threatening to build it up. One of these days when my budget isn't so strained... ;D

this isnt factual, but if you think about the percent of chevy vs others
80%chev
10%ford
5%mopar
5%other
what do you think happens when you play the average.

sorry to get off topic

It depends on what finish line you're refering to:
In drag racing -
Powering John force in his Funny car Ford is well, a Mopar Hemi
In fact EVERY top fuel and Funny car is Mopar powered.

Getting into the stock ranks, it's always full of Mopars.

Drifiting- who is the champ? Oh yea he's mopar powered too.

Looking at random Top Fuel boat websites like http://topfueldragboat.com/driver.htm what's on the front - Yep a blown Mopar Hemi - same here http://www.toxicrocket.com/gallery.htm and here http://www.speedsportstopfuel.com/stats.htm .....

Where are the Mopar powered boats ? Just look for the FAST ones! :-)

Us Mopar guys are always forgotten,  hell even the poll doesn't have us listed  - I guess that's 'cause you only get to see the rear of the mopars so they aren't as evident...

We'll see where my Mopar stoker build takes me as I yank out the 455.

I went into the 12's in a 4800 lb 3/4 ton van powered by a 440, so I'm pretty sure they can power a boat.

As far as the tech specs - I never hear about broken cranks like the chevys have, or the broken bottom ends / blocks like the Fords. I never hear about any oiling problems below 7000 RPM either - and above that it is one oil line to fix.

Mopar's have the strongest bottom ends, and can easily stroke to 543. With an aftermarket block 630 is possible. A STOCK block and crank is good for 800 HP, with 2 bolt mains! Crossbolting the block, or better still, double crossbolting like aftermarket does, allows over 7000 HP (KB aftermarket block). The cooling system is great compared to other brands. The oil system doesn't feed the rear bearing unfiltered oil like the Chevys, and there isn't a convoluted pickup / oil pump system like in the fords.

Mopars have external oil pumps, meaning A ) the distributor is in the front where it belongs, and B)the oil pump can be swapped out with anything you have room for. No Crank interferance. No pulling the distributor during an intake swap. My oil pump fits nice and can pump 20 GPM. A swap takes a few minutes, and I don't have to crack the pan. Windage trays are easy (15 min install, doesn't touch the mains), and the oil pan doesn't have anything to do with the crank seal. If you need a mondo oil system for sustained high RPM, one external -16 line, 7 inches long straight to the external pump, will take care of all the oiling needs.

When you pull the distributor, the gear stays with the intermediate shaft - meaning the disti can only go back in two ways. No way to be off a tooth, you are either 180 out or right on. Neither Ford or GM can say that.

Water systems , oil, and intake is separated. You can break or modify one without touching the other.

Shaft mounted rockers are stronger than the stud mounted ones, doing a 600 lbs spring is really no big deal.

The short mopar bigblock is taller than the TALL race chevy block. Stock they can go bigger. Rod ratio is favored to the Mopar, esp whe the 440 crank is put into the shorter block (400), 1.8:1

The drawbacks are the pistons are heavy - so you swap it out for chevy .990 pins and 7.1 inch rods, and with a stoker crank and short pistons, and suddenly your combo has less bobweight than a smallblock. Also, the short valve was a drawback, but now that so many people are making heads, they are all long valve and flow a ton of air.

The bore size for the BB Mopar is 4.340 in the 400, so with max overbore, you are at 4.4! Talk about unshrouding the valve!

They are also Nitrous Oxide friendly - even a cast piston 440 can handle a 175 shot time after time.

In reality, I like anything that goes fast, so if that means taking my strong Mopar block and Crank, putting Chevy rods and pins and Ford Pistons to go fast - I'm all for it. I'm sure all of you will have a chance to show me how much faster your Chevys and Fords are next year at the river :-)

Bore and stroke baby - give me as much as I can get....

You CAN indeed get over 700 hp from stock Chevy block, crank and heads. My Sanger had over 700 hp.
It is very rare to see a 460 ford run hard. It might run good for a 460 Ford, but dollar for dollar it will be crushed by the Chevy. Yes there are some fast Fords, but at what cost. I'll go dollar for dollar against ANY Ford based engine combo.

Used parts are priced by supply and demand, there is no or very little demand for used marine mopar parts, that's one possible reason why yours were cheap. Most people that have Olds engines want something else, Ford or Chevrolet, and there's a billion of those used Olds marine parts for sale. It's one thing to get your boat's parts cheap but it needs to stay running to stay cheap. $300 for all of those parts plus the engine is a steal, for any brand and I'm sure you're very aware of that.

While I have your attention (hopefully) do you know the major differences between the mopar compared to the Chevrolet's and Ford's? (2 or 4 bolt mains, main cap bolt diameter's, rod bolt diameter's, do the head bolts go through/into water jackets, etc etc etc... thanks!)

Ralph there is no doubt that your drag car's engine is SIK, that's a huge understatement... but there's more than one reason most pro drag racer's run Hemi's and not Ford's version of the Hemi.

I'm still waiting to see percentages of races won for each manufacturer...

I know. law of supply and demand. I do think it is funny how normally the Mopar stuff is way expensive, except in the boating world . Things are turned upside down here ...

Typically, Mopars are 2 bolt mains. Because they use the block itself for side support for the main caps, this is able to handle 800 HP. From there to 1200, they have side bolts that screw the side of the caps into the block (a la hemi). From 1200-2500, Indy makes a block with the side bolts, but with 1/2 inch bolts instead of 7/16ths. KB uses 9/16 inch bolts up to 3000 HP, then double side bolts beyond that. No one knows how much this can take, the top fuelers pushing well over 7000 HP don't break them (reportedly, they are at 8300 HP now!).

Both Chevy and Ford use bolts into the block, but only in one direction (up) with no side support. A 4 bolt main chevy / ford is not as strong as a 2 bolt Mopar for this reason. This is the weak area of the ford blocks, the entire assy pulls out of the block. Bob Glidden used to complain that after a run, they could change the main bearings without touching a bolt :-)

For the rods, there are either 3/8ths or 7/16th bolts for the big end, and 1.094 pin on the top. This is either a liability or an asset depending on what you want. Really the Chevy .990 pin is good enough and it is lighter, so for gas apps over 6800 RPM, the Chevy pin is the way to go. Below that, there is an advantage to the Mopar for strength. If you compare a Chevy rod to a Mopar rod, the chevy one looks a bit weak. Aftermarket is a different story, they all have 7/16th bolts, and are all set up for the Chevy pin and bearing (at least for the mopars).

Head bolts on a mopar do not go into a water jacket, and there are either 5 (wedge) or 6 (hemi) 7/16th bolts per cylinder. Aftermarket blocks can have this bumped to 1/2 inch. No real mods needed for high boost / compression / fuel like the Fords.

If you compare the crank snout between the mfg, it is easy to tell the Mopar - it's twice as big! This is one of the weak areas of the Chevy, you always hear about crank snouts being broken.

Ralph there is no doubt that your drag car's engine is SIK, that's a huge understatement... but there's more than one reason most pro drag racer's run Hemi's and not Ford's version of the Hemi.

I'm still waiting to see percentages of races won for each manufacturer...

Yes, they don't survive the horsepower, plain and simple. They come and go, as do the aftermarket blocks (arias, tfx, etc), but the Mopar design is the one that can survive (KB).

As far as the real percentages, it's easy.
TF - 100%
Funny car - 100%
TFboat - 100%

I seriously doubt Force will try to move off of what him and Coil have been winning with for 20+ years.  The NHRA is a little gun shy of any other designs for the fuel classes - they hate accidents and the track getting oiled. In the non fuel ranks though, IE pro stock, it is the pontiac head design that is winning races. They make a Mopar like bottom end (except they don't make the skirts as long, helping with both windage and weight), and then throw a set of custom pontiac heads on. In the IHRA and the mountain motors, its the Fords that are the big dogs and win *everything*. In the NMRA it's those damn little motors (Ford 302 based 347's) with the big hairdryers going deep into the 6's. BTW - Ralph - That Ford HEMI is sweet.

****
Comparing factory to factory blocks (no aftermarket)

Size of stroking (CID) - Advantage Ford
Block height - Advantage Mopar
Bobweight - Advantage Chevy
Valvetrain stability - Advantage Mopar
Block Strength - Advantage Mopar
Parts availablity on the water -  Advantage Chevy. (Big) Disadvantage Mopar.
Oil system - Advantage Mopar
Head CFM - Advantage Mopar
Changing the starter - Chevy's bolts point up making it difficult to pull in a jet boat, Advantage Mopar and Ford

Bore stroke CID
4.362 3.850 460
4.320 3.750 440
4.250 4.000 454

The 454 will have the biggest ooph down low where the stroke makes up for the small bore size. The irony is they have the lightest parts and should be able to rev the highest.
The 440 will make the most power up higher in the band and be able to rev highest.
The 460 splits the two but is closest to the Mopar.

Mopar has the hemi head, which flows the best. Chevy has the splaid valve heads, which are not quite a wedge, not quite a hemi. They flow well, but have an issue with runner length, as there are two different sizes so you can't optimize for any one RPM.

Ford's runners typically flow great on the intake.

*****

After it is all said and done, it is really the brand that makes you proudest that you should use. I know my Mopars take a beating and beat on everyone else. My buddy says the same thing with his fords, and another with his Chevys (except I beat them at the strip :-). If you are anywhere south of 600 horsepower, it doesn't matter and as long as we all have fun, that is what it is all about. In the old days, the Chevys, Fords, Mopars and Pontiacs ran pretty damn close to each other at the strip.

Just watch your NOS intake on the Fords so you don't remove your bottom end without tools, and make sure you Chevy guys don't overload the crank snout and change your oil regularly as that rear main gets unfiltered oil....

Well I was talking in General. But Mopar has raised their prices on their crate motors,

It used to be..

Mopar 360 380hp crate= $3400
Chevy 350 380hp= $4900

Mopar 500ci 500hp= $5000
Chevy 496 500hp=$7500

Or something to that effect, I'm just going off memory.

I believe Mopar was the one that started the crate motor craze.

But when you buy a Hemi you pay ALOT, due to how rare the blocks are.

I also am only talking about factory built motors, not World products, or Indy or anything.

Maybe iIve got my "chevy blinders" on, but it seems to me that chev is ahead of the R +D game, like with the 572. chev comes out with a 502  the comp. answers with their 500's , so chev says oh yeh have a 572. (not to mention chevs small block program) Also arent fords 460 lifter dia. smaller than chev? I guess it would'nt matter much with a roller cam, but that sounds like a disadvantage to me with a flat tappet.
Title: Re: The Big Debate - Ford Vs. Chevy
Post by: pw_Tony on October 30, 2007, 04:16:54 PM
Chevy has the smallest lifter diameter. 0.8437

Mopar has the biggest. 0.904

Ford Lifters= 0.875

Before the 572 and 502 came out in crate form the Mopar had the 500 and 528 Hemi.

The 528 Hemi made 610hp compared to Chevy 572 620hp... but the Hemi did it with less compression and less cam.

But all crate motors are supposed to be rated at 2000 feet elevation (or something like that) and once dynoed they actually make more corrected horsepower

Hmmmm I got the lifter thing bas-akwards. Well i guess i learned a couple of things on this thread i didn't know a 460 could be stroked larger than a 454 either. How large is feasable with a chev 454, a 502, and a ford 460, and ok a 440?  A 454 IS 496?  502=540?   460?   440?  ???

I believe with an average truck block 454 some can go 510ci long as the bores are sonic tested to see how thick they are.

As stated earlier in the thread any run of the mill 460 can go over 550+ c.i with no clearance issues.

440= not a good stroker motor, can't go over 500ci without some serious work I believe, unless you get a raised cam block

Sorry, BB mopars can go 543 no issues with stock 440 block, 512 with 400 block. Sonic checked can possibly go higher. goto www.440source.com if you don't believe me.  A raised cam block can get you well over 670 ci.

A 454 Chevy can only go to 496 due to the block bore config.

Chevys have a long stroke, which tends to give great low rpm performance, not needed in a jet.

Really? I didn't know that. Only have done stroker small blocks, haven't done a big block "Yet".

That's some good info, I always thought the cam to crank didn't have enough clearance... and that 440's were the lightest big blocks

Don't forget that it all ain't about cubic inches.  It's how you put the combo together and how good things breath IN and OUT.  I have had a iron headed, unported, small valved, stock crank (440 in a 400 block) solid cammed motor dyno 550 horses and 540 ft lb using 474 cu in.  Made 500 ft/lbs at 3400 rpm.  Using smaller valves actually gets better airflow and so more efficient heads mean cheap power.  This combo went 12.09 at 113 mph in a 4,000 lb Road Runner back in the 80's.

It seems like alot of geometry going on in there for that much displacement. Rod angle isn't an issue????? cuz there must be a big throw going on in there.

Last thing you need is a piston being forced sideways more offten than not.

Jet boats need torque down low. Most jets run under 5500 rpms. You couldn't pull up a big fat skier like me without torque.  ;D

That is one statement I don't understand. If you goose a prop, the prop holds it back much like a tire in a car. If you goose a jet, it will goto whatever the HP/RPM/Impeller allows. Am I misunderstanding (or maybe we just have a different opinion of what low end is)  :-\

Also, down low for me is 1000-2500 RPM's, not 5500. That is the top of mid range/bottom of top end in my book. I guess I'll test out that theory next year when they have to lug my fat a$$ out of the water.  ;D

Chevys have a 4 inch bore, which is great for emissions, which is why they are still around and had facory development for the last 20 years

Mopars with the largest bore got handed a death knell when emissions rolled around. Crate motors = OK, factory builds = no go.

All the new Hemi's are small bore, long stroke, just like the old chevys - The 572 Chevy is a big bore, short stroke, just like the old Mopars... Given how all of the engineers and management from Ford left for Mopar in the late 60's, the Mopar engineers and management all left for Chevy 5-7 years ago... history repeats itself...

In researching his 428 Ford I've learned that Ford's are even more of a pain in the asss than I ever thought they were. Let's take the 428. The 428 was built in several platforms, the passenger car version, the Police Interceptor version, the Cobra Jet version, and the Super Cobra Jet version. Now the CJ (Cobra Jet) and the SCJ (super Cobra Jet) were built on a block that is called a C block, unless of course Ford didn't have any C blocks at the time then Ford used the A block. Each block, A and C, could both be cast with standard main deck webbing or reinforced main deck webbing. Now if the oil valley "holes" on the back of the block were never drilled then the block came with a solid lifter cam which would mean that the block was a standard passenger car block. If the oil valley "holes" are plugged with mini-freeze plugs or plugged with square drive plugs then the block came with a hydraulic cam and the block could be a passenger car block, a PI block, a CJ block, or a SCJ block. The connecting rods are real tell-tale signs, because Ford only used about 15 different rods in just the 428's, each rod version having it's own designated style of engine it was supposed to be assembled with, unless of course Ford didn't have the right rods in stock in which case they used whatever rod Ford had on the shelf at the time that would work in a 428. In 1969 Ford used like 4 different rods in the SCJ engine, unless of course Ford didn't have the right rods then Ford would assemble the engine with whatver they had on the shelf that would work on a 428. That is a brief description of the Ford 428 shortblock, it gets even worse when you analyze the rest of the engine and the different version's of each 428.

Take the above into consideration when you look at Ford V-8's. Ford had the flathead V-8, the Y block V-8, the FE series V-8's (428 included), the old style small block V-8, the newer style small block V-8, the modern small block V-8's, the 429/460 big block V-8, the side oiler, the W, the C, the M, and who knows what the phuk else. I doubt if Ford even knows what the phuk else they made. With all of the variations of Ford V-8's, it's no wonder the Ford lovers keep praising the 429/460, it would be too confusing to praise any other Ford V-8 along with the 429/460.  [attachimg=#]

Chevy. Big block or small block? Two piece rear main or one piece rear main? Big block only - tall deck or short deck? Big block only - two bolt main or four bolt main. OK, that summed it up, thank you and have a nice day!   ;)

Ford vs. Chevy

I removed 11 - eleven - bolts to take off a water pump off of a Ford 460 today. One of them broke. With 11 total bolts on a Ford and 4 on a Chevy the Ford has at least 7 more reasons that it can go wrong. Why at least 7? Because the freakin water pump bolts through a timing chain cover/fuel pump mount/dipstick holder/only God knows what else thingy. On a Chevy the water pump has it's own bolts. The timing chain cover on a Chevy is held on with it's own bolts. So now I'm thinking that since the timing chain cover was disrupted by removing the water pump on this Ford I have to pull the timing chain cover and oil pan to replace their gaskets. Ford = [attachimg=#]  IMO Chevy is much more simple design.

Tear down or start swapping normal stuff a Mopar and you'll realize even the Chevy is overly complicated where it doesn't need to be!

I picked Ford for the boat because thats all I had ever rebuilt a a teen.  Figured go with what you know.  I would probably pick a 454 if I was to do another boat for no other reason than price and availability of aftermarket parts.  Until then though I am determined to make this Ford go faster and faster >:D

Yea, in the 60's. 225 Slant 6's, 273's and 318 polys (plus the 1960 golden commados and the 1970 340's). Really not that common though, the Oranges and the Blues were the mainstays.

In 1961 *every* engine was silver except the 300 with the long rams, those got red. The 55-56 241-260-270's also were silver.

Korean War cars 1951-1953 some engines were painted flat light gray non-aluminum paint due to sortage of silver pigment.

Your father and you (I'm assuming) built a great engine for your race boat and you should be really proud of your accomplishments so far.

I'm hoping Terry fixes that Chevy breaking down problem  :banghead:  with my engine.  :D

every motor can be reliable if you build it rite. mine has about 60miles of mostly 5,000 and up rpm's on it now. probably due to be freshend up but dont have the time before the next race, so, i'll just roll the dice

I wasnt refering to race motors, Most of those are wrenched on before/after/and between heats.

No offense meant but I just sold a very rusty Ford 428 shortblock on eBay for over $600. I bought, a few months ago, on eBay a complete Chevy 454 longblock for less than $250. So basically you can buy at least 12 complete 454 Chevy's for one complete 428 Ford. I wonder why the Ford 428 is so rare?   :sly:  Don't even get me started on the way that Ford assembled those 428's... passenger car motors, PI motors, CJ motors, SCJ motors, what a bunch of horsesh!t.  :banghead:

On a side note:

...the full planned lot of 4500 were not produced. Approximately 550 were built in 2004, nearly 1900 in 2005, and just over 1600 in 2006, for a grand total of 4038; however, the final 11 car bodies manufactured by Mayflower Vehicle Systems were disassembled and the frames and body panels sold as service parts.

1. Ford Didnt even make the cars

So i guess you and everyone else could drive a vette.  not nearly the performace of a gt but hey whose keeping track right!  i dont know about you but i dont want to drive what just about any kid out of high school could get financed for!  What is really sad is that a lot of ford dealerships have mustangs sitting on thier lots that could hang with a vette.  Now thats mighty impressive sounding for chevy!

Hi Tony,

I picked the boat up from the interior guy last week he did some correction work on it. The interior looks great. I'm going to re-set the valvetrain this weekend ( I backed it off a few months ago) and it might get drug up to El Cap next week or the week after.

I put a different carb on it, want to see how it run's and how much gas it will use. The gas use will be hard to tell at El Cap, but it will be fun to take it out back to see if it can top 100 off the Nos.

Hopefully we'll see ya at Martinez this Summer.

That picture is of a Z06, I dont know many kids who could get financed on 75k let alone when its optioned at almost $100,000. The Z06 is hanging door to door with the Dodge Viper and I have never seen a showroom mustang that wasnt aftermarket modified hang with a Viper or Z06!

I think when you were referring to the car that any kid can get financed on you were referring to the stang! talk about run of the mill! ;D

I know what the pic was! Lets take the new Mustang gt 500.  500hp.  The limited edition 427 z06 is 505hp with an actual msrp of 84k while the gt 500 is at 43k.  Even better is the 'stang is only a 5.4l and the vette is a 7l.  As far as the viper goes..... what a pos.  It takes dodge an 8l v-10 to get 600hp.  If I was a neutral minded car buyer, I would take the stang every time on the basis of it having almost the same amount of power as the limited edition zo6 at half the price.  Then again opinions are like assholes.  Everyone has one and they all stink.

Ok, so this is a side by side of all three done by automobile magazine. I would say that they are all hanging side by side! But when you look at the fact that the GT wasnt made to hang wit the vette and viper but to compete with the Ferrari 430 and a Lamborghini I would then have to say that the GT isnt living up to what it was made to do. Oh ya, the only way that the GT is even hanging with them is that it is Supercharged from the factory, It couldnt even hold its own without the boost!

The GT is not a straight line drag car!  The GT has a lot smaller engine than the other 2.  The GT has better numbers on a track when put up against other exotic supercars.  The GT was built to be a Ferrari killer and it does.

                              Ferrari F430                           Ford GT
List price est            $171,000                               $149,995

Curb weight est        3150 lb                                 3500 lb

Engine, transmission  4.3L V-8, 6-speed manual         5.4L suprchgd V-8, 6-speed manual

Horsepower, bhp @ rpm 483 @ 8500                        550 @ 6500

0–60 mph                3.5 sec                                  3.6 sec

Top speed              198 mph                                205 mph

Braking from 60 mph 113 ft                                   122 ft

Slalom                    70.9 mph (Spider)                   69.6 mph

Fuel mileage est       12.0 mpg                               est 14.0 mpg

I would say the GT is holding is own pretty fuking good here on a test done by road and track.

The Viper is slower on a track because it has much less invasive "keep the driver safe" tech built into it.  The guy described it as a Harley on 4 wheels for a reason.  Its old school feel is uniquely USA.  Interestingly give the choice of those 3 Supercars he chose to drive the Viper first. Probably another reason it was slower getting around the track.

Yea but the guy is talking to the camera the whole time, who knows if he got serious about it and 5 laps in each, and then got an average. I just posted that video because of how close they all are. There's also videos like that saying the Z06 beats them all, and some saying the Viper is the best

People call it a GT40 because thats where the concept came from and they look so similar.

The GT is not a straight line drag car!  The GT has a lot smaller engine than the other 2.  The GT has better numbers on a track when put up against other exotic supercars.  The GT was built to be a Ferrari killer and it does.

                              Ferrari F430                           Ford GT
List price est            $171,000                               $149,995

Price as tested est    $200,204                               $173,845

Curb weight est        3150 lb                                 3500 lb

Engine, transmission  4.3L V-8, 6-speed manual         5.4L suprchgd V-8, 6-speed manual

Horsepower, bhp @ rpm 483 @ 8500                        550 @ 6500

0–60 mph                3.5 sec                                  3.6 sec

0–100 mph              8.1 sec                                  8.0 sec

0–1320 ft (1/4 mile) 11.7 sec @ 120.1 mph              11.7 sec @ 125.8 mph

Top speed              198 mph                                205 mph

Braking from 60 mph 113 ft                                   122 ft

Braking from 80 mph 192 ft                                   214 ft

Skidpad                  0.90g (Spider)                        1.00g

Slalom                    70.9 mph (Spider)                   69.6 mph

Fuel mileage est       12.0 mpg                               est 14.0 mpg

I would say the GT is holding is own pretty fuking good here on a test done by road and track.

you did a good job showing a car with more horse power, larger displacement AND a supercharger only keeping up with its true rival. I would think with 1.1L more displacement and a Blower that it should be turning more then only 67HP more then the Ferrari.

Comparing those 2 you made me want a ferrari only that much more.  The fit and finish of the GT is garbage comparred to a ferrari, I have been for a ride in a GT, I know someone who owned one along with ferraris, austin martin DB9, and vintage racing cars. I wonder why he got rid of the GT.

Hey sleeper...I hate to tell ya...BUT it is a G/T 40!  >>:D

A little trivia for ya: Ford couldn't call the car the GT-40 because the dumb asses never copywrited the name. I think it was sometime in the late '70's or early 80's that some guy's copy writed the name. They demanded that Ford pay them several million dollars outwrite or some stuped amount like $25 K per car to use the name GT-40.

Just another example as to how stupid the court system is, it was Ford, not two dipstick's that made that name have value. The name rightly belonged to Ford, but they never registered the copywrite.

I don't ever remember seeing it written G/T 40  maybe it is but I don't think so.

The video you posted, I went to the SEMA show in '06 and there were 3  1,000+ hp TT GT's

Oh, I'll put my little single carb Ford up against any Chevy posting. ( Carry on)

The Ford did have better gas mileage, which is important when you spend 150k on a car ;)

And a little more - the dodge boys came out with a prototype hot car they called "the boss" . Ford liked it so much, they borrowed it. They all steal names...

My Mistake..............Vehicle Summary
Simply put, the Ford GT is an all-American supercar that was created in homage to the GT40 racecars that dominated competition at Le Mans in the mid-1960s. A supercharged, midmounted V-8 produces 550 horsepower, which is roughly equivalent to the output from the original, larger engine that went into competition GT40 cars.  ::)
