Using your trailer power to charge the boat batteries

On my mopar tow vehicles (4x4 ram, 4x4 jeep GC) I have the 7 pin connector - which has a positive (I think only while engine is running) power lead. Has anyone ever tried to rig it so it charges the boat batteries up on the trip to the lake / river? I don't know the current capabilities, so it may not work, but it is just a thought I had that I want to investigate...

 It might work , but it would be a little messy.  Two jumpers from the trailers harness to the boat (12v+ and ground), and I would put an auto reset circut breaker at the source of the power in the vehicle, maybe 10 amp max so you dont overload the small gauge wiring or the trailer conector.

 Stop thinking so much and get back to work  :o  that boats not going to finish itself  ;D

I just came from working on the engine.. I need to make a bracket to mount up the GM alternator. The front of the engine is done otherwise...

I think you are probably right about the 10A max load, so a dead battery is going to kill that wire in short order. Hmm, time to think (I'm stuck until I make that bracket)...

 ???  I've seen wiring kits for removeable winches in the off road industry, where you put the winch into a trailer hitch receiver, they use fairly large gauge wire.  ???

 Good idea,  We used one like that to charge the batt in one of the old race car trailers.  Something like this http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_745959_-1_10715 .  I connected it direct to the trucks batt through a high curent relay, so we could shut off power to the connector when not in use.

Hey Speedy, I just read that you have a formula to figure out what octane is req'd of an engine that takes into account compression ratio's, valve overlaps, etc... Can I get that formula please  ;D

with a extra harness or something, i dont see why you couldnt charge your boat batteries....its just like hooking up an enclosed trailer and charging the "house battery" as you drive, you would have to bump up your trailer harness plug to the 7 prong plug to access that "hot wire"...

Chromey - Yep, trailer is already set up for 7 wire...

HR56 - http://kb-silvolite.com/calc.php?action=comp - and I'm already running FORD pistons in one of my motors...(Mopar crank and block, chevy rods, ford pistons) ... I literally wrote the book on using GM alternators on Mopars and Fords. None of my older vehicles will ever see a mopar alternator, they suck. bad.

Damn that's funny, bet it runs like a mo fo though. Wrong calculater but cool link, thanks. I'm looking for a calculator that will give me a  recquired octane number for an engine with a known comression ratio and all other factors known - other than the required octane for that particular engine.  :banghead:  ;D
