Voltage Regulator Wiring - Ford 460

Hey guys,
Just bought this 18' Hallett and Im trying to work out all the bugs.  Turns out my alternator that is brand new (just bought it today after I had the old one tested) is not charging my battery.  I have a feeling the wiring from the alternator to the voltage regulator isn't correct and I am finding some conflicting information online.  I did look at the wiring diagrams here, but they do not include a voltage regulator.

Alternator:  Duralast 7078, has no internal regulator, has a battery, Stator, Field, and ground terminals.
Voltage Regulator:  VR-428 has I,A,S, and F terminals.

Alt Stator wire connected to VR S terminal
Alt Field wire connected to VR F terminal
Alt Batt wire connected to nothing (i know)
Alt ground connected to battery ground

Does the Alt batt wire connect to the VR "A" terminal and the VR "I" go to ignition?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a pic of the voltage regulator so we are sure we are talking apples to apples.

I run a 4g wire from alt to my 2g starter wire.

Do you know how these work?  If you have the wiring schematic, they are pretty much pass/fail.

I think understand how it works. It tells the alternator when to start charging the system.

The instructions with the VR just said "connect wires back together" and the schematics online show numerous different ways. I just wanna hook it up right. I assume the F wire connects to the F terminal on the VR. And the battery wire from the alternator should connect to the starter solenoid or the positive on the battery.   The Stator wire either it connects to the stator terminal on the VR or to nothing as I've seen online. As for the "I" (ignition) on the VR. That's where the information gets conflicting.

The VR needs to be able to read what the electrical system is at so does the VR  I terminal hook up to a 12v source?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am stepping out for a while,  but I will get back to this thread later.  The "I" terminal is the reference to the dash voltage. Many use an idiot light for resistance, it basically tells the regulator what to do (or not to do).

Eventing else is wire for wire. And yes, the "Batt." Terminal goes to either the starter solenoid or a junction block to the positive post of the battery.

The system is over charging with the old VR (broke), the new VR shows no charging. So it's either not charging cuz the batt is already charged or Something is is up.

Wires are like for like.

If you have on the alternator;

FLD.
STA.
BATT.
GND.

And the regulator has ;

I
A
S
F

Then, FLD to F on the reg.
STA to nothing.
GND, well, to ground
Batt. to (+)battery terminal and A on reg.
From the ignition switch "I" terminal go to S on reg.

Should work, battery voltage should go to 14.5 volts when running, regardless of whether or not the battery is charged.


Good hunting... This should work without an idiot light.

The I on the regulator goes to nothing, the STA goes to nothing....
