How long can I run the engine without water hose hooked up to it

Sent from my SCH-R530C using SoCal JetBoats mobile app

you can fire up a motor for a couple seconds and give it a rev to make sure things are working.  make sure pump/driveline is disconnected.

When the boat is out of the water is the valve suposed to be closed or open when the water hose is hooked up and when I take the boat to the river do I leave the valve closed or open when its sitting in the water after I get it off the trailer

I have always called BS on the water running through the pump deal.

All I do is spray water into the pump intake and through the nozzle to rinse out any potential crap/debris, back off the packing bolts and spray some Teflon lube into the packing seal and light it up.

I have run them for as long as 25 minutes an the trailer. Never hurt a damn thing. I run an Ultimate wear ring and a stuffer. The only drawback is that it's a little hard on the splines to rattle back and forth, spraying water in the pump will do nothing for that. I sometimes leave the DL out, but more often than not, let her buck.

Ever seen someone post pictures of damage on a pump from running it dry?  Bet not.   :sly:

Just curious more than anything. Would spraying some water in it have helped at all? Hoping you're going to say no.

I mean the valve under the engine for the water when the boat is in the water do I need it to be open or closed when I start the boat out of the water and I hook up a garden hose I open the valve and water comes out of the headers so when I'm at the river I would assume I should have the valve open for water flow is that right

There is a hose conection in the boat to hook the water hose up at the house and reconect it for when ita in the water that has to be open when the boat is in the water doesn't it I just want to get the proper procedure down so I can take care of this cool boat and engine

Gotcha.

Yes the valve would be partially open. If this is a gate valve the valve setting is quite important.

Since there is no water pressure when the motor is not running, you don't need to close the valve with the boat in the water.

If you do indeed have water injected headers with a Bassett type tee, here is a proven way to set up the water valve (this is for a gate valve).

Get the boat in the water and pull out of the way of people at the ramp, find a spot out of the way and start the boat with the valve about half open and run it at idle, there should be NO water coming out of the headers.

After a few minutes of running, start closing the valve slowly (about a half a turn at a time) until the water temp starts to rise (look for about 140-150*F at the most).

Once that has happened, take her out for a cruise and watch the headers for steam, they should begin to steam at 1500-1800 RPM. If they come in too early (below 1500) you need to pinch down just a smidge on the valve (careful, those headers will be hot as hell). If they come in too late (above about 1800) you need a bit more water.

Your done. If something does not work the way you think it should, write it down.

Write down;
How many turns the valve is open/closed.
At what RPM the headers come in.
What the engine temp. is at idle.
What the engine temp. is at WOT and also cruise.

The temperature on the gauge might be all over the place for the most part. That is OK.

Figure about 150* at idle and probably about 120* or so at WOT. It can move pretty quick, so watch it for a minute or two before making any adjustments.
I keep my hand in the dump line stream when I am setting them up, but I have done over 100 of them.

Good hunting.

Forgot to mention. There is a chance that the overboard dump line needs to be bigger or smaller, so don't be too frustrated it the numbers don't quite work pout right.

If the engine runs too warm with the headers working properly, you may need a slightly larger dump fitting outlet.

Too cold, and you may need to restrict it down some.

Both are pretty easy, as long as the headers are working right, don't be afraid to drive it as long as the engine runs cool. You may get some condensation in the oil, but that's an easy fix with an oil pan heater.

Any time, also PM sent.

Also, bring with you a tie wrap or two, you cn run a tie wrap through the handle of the valve to keep it from moving all by itself (with the help of parking lot elves  ;))
