One other thing , I didnt think these 454's came internally balanced . The damper on the left came on it and the one on the left was off my motor . Am I missing something here

There are several possibilities.

First, it may not be a 454. 427 and smaller were internally balanced and would use the balancer on the left. Measure the bore and stroke.

Second, it could be a 454 that someone went to the trouble/expense of having internally balanced.

Third possibility is that someone was running the wrong balancer.

Just throw a standard deck manifold on top of it and see how it fits. If everything lines up, it's a standard deck, if it don't it's a tall deck.

Looks like you've got plenty of engine parts laying around there, I'm sure you can come up with something.

If the casting # says it's a tall deck, then it's a tall deck block. BUT, it may have been decked, so that they didn't have to fuk with all the normal tall deck issues.

I don't think it's possible to deck a tall deck engine down to a standard block. You're talking about .400 (about 7/16").

I've got a printout of the Mortec BBC site in front of me, and found your block number.

It says: 3999289....454.......71-79...2 or 4 bolt, some "CE" replacement blocks had four bolt main caps

So that being said it is a standard deck, I don't care what anybody else says.

No need to be checking different manifolds or running to the PC to check numbers. Factory tall decks have a 1/8" pipe plug that is just above the timing cover to the right.

Ok, that too. Also, the water inlet locations work as well.

I've been meaning to ask about that plug. Is that oil or water? I'm looking for somewhere to attach a gauge to check my oil pressure, without unhooking my electrical gauge. Will that plug work, or is it for something else?

454 Chevy from a heavy duty truck, like a 60 series, (now called Topkick/Kodiaks), they had the 454 option that had the same valvetrain as a Talldeck 366/427.

This is a best guess, but came from two different sources...Probably from a truck or a motorhome.
