Once I could get it to start it would run great and when the pump was disconnected about a month ago it would still crank hard
Large or small flywheel?
Does the starter sound good when it cranks?
Do any of the cables get hot?
Have you tried cranking the motor over with a ratchet and socket or a breaker bar?
While cranking it over, put a volt meter across the battery terminals to see what the voltage drops to. Above 10v?
Have you tried cranking the engine with the ignition off? Does it crank faster?
Any chance of water in the engine as far a cylinders?
What starter motor?
Flex plate our flywheel?
Ring gear on correctly if flywheel?
Is the block painted on the starter mount pad?
What size cables? And what terminals?
What does the ground attach to?
How long are the cables?
Tried using jumper cables? Does it improve?
What compression ratio are you thinking? The ignition off test will eliminate this one.
