How to remove this paint

How can I get this paint off? It is just painted on top of the gel coat. Rubbing compound with a buffer? Wet sand?

Have you tried acetone? How about lacquer thinner?

Depending on how long is been on there, you will more than likely have to color sand of the Phantom marks. The gel coat will have oxidized more in the surrounding areas and not at all under the paint.

have you tried anything so far? does it have a layer of clear over it?

i would test a spot with mineral spirits....or paint thinner. i wouldnt use a paint remover/stripper...could be too harsh. and id say acetone would help remove some gel coat or soften it....not good. just my opinion. could be wrong there.

carb cleaner. brake cleaner. both might soften paint so you can scrap with a razor...or maybe rub off

color sanding and buffing will take a layer of gel with it. which would may be needed after you get paint off

ill ask my painter tomorrow, see what he recommends.

I can personally guarantee that acetone, while it will remove the wax and dull the shine, will not harm the gel coat.

There is no clear on it. Someone just painted it on.

Negative on the brake clean.

The paint and pin striping were done by the same guy. Not that it probably makes any difference.

I just did this last night with a smaller piece. I've read threads about easy off oven cleaner....I had some under the sink...and a few beers on board so I decided to try it.... Turned out great, but you have to acted fast. I masked the area off...sprayed lightly over the area....walked into the kitchen to get a beer...came back about 45 sec later and scrapped with a plastic putty knife and immediately washed it off several times.

I am getting the boat wet sanded professionally this week which is one reason I did it. I am not saying this is the right way, just sharing my experience.

X2 on easy off, never used it on anything fiberglass but on my 65 it got a painted front fender back to Og paint.

I really don't want to have to wet sand it as I don't see me keeping this hull after this season but "Plum Crazy" has to go. I will get some oven cleaner tomorrow and see how it works out.

Your going to be color sanding and rubbing bud. IMHO no way around it. Flat surfaces are easy. Won't take long.

Sweet. On top of trying to get my pump rebuilt I get to deal with this. T minus two and a half weeks until laughlin, I have to get her ready.

Fiberglass paint stripper you paint it on and let it sit for about 5 min then you scrape it off. Do small sections. It will remove the paint down to gel coat. I did my boat this was and it didn't damage the original gel coat.

I would love to be able to do that. Working nights right now doesn't give me much play to do stuff during the day during the week.

If you know this is paint over original gel then I would use something a bit stronger than acetone. Acetone will work but it will be a slow process and you need patients. I have used Citristrip from Home Depot with good results, but whatever you do just keep in mind there will be sanding involved. Once you have the paint removed clean the area good and wet sand the area smooth again. Buff, apply wax, and you're off. If you have questions about wet sanding let us know, it's not as difficult as it sounds if you have not been through it before.

I stripped my whole boat of a thick layer of paint with Citristrip paint stripper from Home Depot or Lowes.Worked awesome with no damage to the Gelcoat underneath

I this case I'd start with either 800 or 1000grit. That should cut thru pretty nice. Then progress to 1500, then 2000 grit. 2500 if needed. Afterward I'd hit it with buffer and compound ...wool pad first then sponge. It's a process. You're gonna need a block or some kind of firm backing when sanding...otherwise you can leave finger grooves behind. Looks wavy. It is possible to sand thru gel...so be careful. You're only trying to removed the marks left behind from the painted "plum crazy"
