What Kinda of boat is this???
« on: June 11, 2008, 04:55:59 PM »
Okay, I need this boat like a gunshot to the head but, I live an 1/8th of a mile from an awesome saltwater boat launch that allows me to go anywhere in some very proctected waters.  I've taken the Brendella out there for years but would prefer not to if possible. The nearest fresh water is almost two hours away so I'd like to find a salt boat that had some style too.

Lo and behold I saw this at an auction place and thinking to myself,
  • Room for Jan and I? Check
  • Room for Kids and Grandkids? Check
  • Room for Coats, Blankets (yah, I'm in washington remember)? Check
  • Room for Coolers? Oh Yah!!!
  • Bitchin Style? Serious
  • No more worrying about getting swamped like that stupid Trophy tried to do to us in the middle of the bay? Check
  • Potentially cheap to pick up? Check
  • Able to Cocktail cruise but not much more speed than that so anybody could borrow it? Check

I'm diggin this boat but I don't know what it is. Anybody got any ideas?  Jets are rare in these parts....

Thanks guys.....john

That there is a Wriedt Montara circa 1973-5.   I looked for mine for a long time cuz I wanted a lot of area where the kids and wife could stay out of the sun.  They seem to be very well constructed (HEAVY) but the handle well and look great, in my opinion.  Some have windows, mine does not.  Mine runs OK as far as speed but out of the hole is seriously lacking with the stock 455.  The builder was in SoCal but now in Texas.  They told me that they put Fords, Chevys and Olds in them at the time.  So far I have only seen one in person, but now I have seen 2 others on here.

That's it!!!  I was trying to figg'r out what the W and M was in the name plate but couldnt see it good enough. It's a really cool boat that looks like it's heavy as hell but a really nice boat.
Reason I couldnt get closer is that the auction (never been to one) doesnt want folks there until auction day which is two weeks away.

GlassCutter, thanks for the email but my scanner kicked them back. What type of file are the pics. I'd really love to see them.  I'm not looking to go fast or far, just want to be cruisin in something beside a bayliner (which, there's nuthin wrong with but I just don't want one).

This might be a keeper if it's solid.  What do you boat swappers think something like this is worth in the cold northwest??

They are jpegs, dunno what the problem is.  I paid 6K but this boat was very clean.  It had been owned by a marine detailer in Havasu for over 10 years (I think he said 20).  He was originally asking 10K but it didn't sell for over a year before I even called him.

Mine also has an icebox but I have seen others with "sofas" on each side under the deck.  My only issues seem to be the subfloor is getting a bit soft.  I definately think you are gonna want a diverter and a swim step tho.  Its a long climb up if you are in the water and want to be in the boat.  Shallow enough "V" though that it should run better than expected with 500 hp.

Thanks for the info and pics Glass.  That boat of yours is sick!  I don't know if I'll pull the trigger on this but me and the Punk Azz Kid will prolly cruise the action in a few weeks and see what the bidding is like. A boat like this one or our lil 18' is the scourge of the NW so I wouldnt expect many if any to bid on it.   Curious to see what happens.

Thanks again and I'll keep you guys in the loop so at the very least you know what this stuff goes for up here......john

If the market was a little better it might be worth it to go up and collect 2-3 boats to bring back south.

Yeah Glasscutter is right.
if you take a look at my thread on Project Boats ,under the following  1973 wriedt montaro . now mine isn`t in as good a shape as that one or even Glasscutters. but hopefully one day it will. might even have found a 455 to put in it. hopefully nothing wrong with the motor though.
and like Glasscutter said the company is now based in Texas. i sent an email to them trying to find some info on mine and i received a quick reply. they also sent me an old brochure on the boat. was nice to see it.
thanks for posting the pics. i was going to do something like that for the engine compartment. and yes if you do get it you would want a swim platform.
good luck on the auction John.

Gotta remember, jets are the scurge up here. 99% of the jets up here are either PWC and those aluminum fishing boats.  Very few folks are interested in a big, 30+ year old boat with a big motor.

Hell, Malcolm up here picked up a cherry 19' spectre last year for around 2K.

We'll see, with my luck, everyone will want it and it'll sell for 4K.....

Growing up, we had a 1978 28' Hawaian daycruiser with a 454/Berk combo and we used to take it to Catalina Island all the time. Man that thing ate fuel lol. Anyway, do watch the exhaust logs. Salt water tears them up inside. Had to replace ours twice in the 4 or so years we had the boat. Good Luck!!!

I wonder if you epoxy coated them inside if that would help?

Probably would have helped, but they didn't have coatings (at least that we knew of) back then.
