Berkeley overhaul kits..?
« on: March 16, 2012, 05:01:20 PM »
Hi everyone! Ive got a 460 with a berkeley that needs some work. It appears that the bowl bearings were in bad shape, which may have caused the shaft to wobble and wear out the wearing.. Im kinda guessing at the moment.

Anyway, Im wondering if the overhaul kits on the berkeley website are what they claim. It seems really inexpensive for a complete overhaul vs some other places offering the same kits for x2 the price.

Also, Ive seen a shaft repair kit for $85 to repair worn shaft ends.. Any good.?

Finally, is it fairly straight forward to do an overhaul.. Are there tight tolerances rhat need to be maintained? Im capable with a wrench, and can do things like motorcycle engine rebuilds etc.. Im asking only because I kinda want to be prepared with special tools etc.. I do have the complete jet out of the boat cleaned, and ready to go.

Thanks, Kory

If you can rebuild a motorcycle engine you can easily rebuild a jet pump.   ;)

Give Tom or Josh at Jet Boat Performance a call, they have good prices on the kits and EXCELLENT phone tech support.  They can walk you through it in a way even I was able to understand.

Probably more work in a clean removal and install than to overhaul.

I had mine done by Jack McClure since I was completely clueless and cared not to gamble my next river trip. Definitely doable there's threads on here you can search that have good info.

So.. I ordered my kit today, and am wondering how much of a berk jet can be rebuilt on a bench out of the boat. Ive got everything out of the boat except the piece attached to the hull..

Can't answer your question since I farmed out the work to MPD.

If you want that transom bezel off to paint it, I'd use some plastic wedges, some long, skinny razors and patience to keep from marring your gel..

why?  :screwy: no need to pull that off if your rebuilding the pump...the suction housing comes off of the intake with a quick bump..

leave the intake alone

good luck bud!
