Legend J120-E thrust bearing replacement
« on: September 13, 2008, 08:36:10 AM »
Ok, am I the only one running a legend????  Jetaholic, I agree, I need to change the bearing. So I'll have ta pull the motor back out, this is the E-style pump, can you fellas tell me if I'll have to remove the whole pump? I just changed jobs and I'm at collins marine on bethel island, my tool supply is plentiful, but just cause were a boat shop dont mean we have all the tools right! Will i need any special tools, will my Merc or volvo tools get the job done?  This pump may have 20-60hrs on it, I just dont think they ever greased the bearing, should I change the zert and see if it quiets down first? Or just dont take the chance! If I pull the pump what  sealant should I use when installing the pump? I just know it wont be 5200! We have ripped transoms apart with that! Do we have a forum here for doing this here or do I need to order that chilton/sealoc/clymer book? :banghead:

I'd replace it!!!! Heard some horror stories about when they go bad and they're ignored. I rebuilt my Berk. pump with very basic tools. But if you have a little money, I would recommend getting the jet pump tool kit. How's the impeller look?

With your pump, it's easier to pull the engine, since the pump is glassed in. The shaft slides out the front, so it can't be done with the engine in the way. You have to remove the bowl and the impeller, pull the shaft out of the suction housing, press the old bearing off the shaft, press the new bearing on the shaft, then reassemble. No re-sealing required. ;)

So you have this pump. Doesn't look too much different than the Berk. E pump.

Here's they're website, just in case you haven't found it.
http://www.legendjet.com/

Wow, they have the sealoc book listed on the Legend site for $30!!!! :o I saw one on Amazon for like $300!!!!! ;)

Anybody know who supplies Legend stuff now? I heard that they went out of business, just like Berkeley did. But CP marine supplies the Berk stuff.

Good luck.

Your insert style jet was NOT desingned to be removed for work IMO (likely epoxied in place) but rather overhauled in the boat , We loosen the engine ,leave all the periferals on it ,raise it and then support it to safely work under it as the pump shaft and bearing come out the front as an assy (year model would be helpful) Due to the nature of the original install you may likley do hull damage by removing it and truthfully its "cake" to repair in the boat. If it hasn't or wasn't greased as you suggested its not likley grease will have much of a positive effect on it at this point . Call or post up if you need more help or parts  Good luck ! Tom

RE "Legend"  they technically don't exist any longer they were bought out "lock stock and barrel" by A/T last year , We are WD for A/T DOM and Legend parts

RE  the year ,some very late jets are designed to be disassembled from the rear (no engine removeal) ,thus the interest in serial # and vintage

RE 5200 ,good sealant for its intended uses but hatefull sh*t to ever try to remove NEVER IMO use it on a jet ,you'll hate yourself if you ever have to take it apart  again IMHO

Hey Marcel, berkeley tools work on the Legend, good stuff IMO, basically a Berkekey, but more updated (all my stuff is from the '70's so its all Berk.) Tools you should need with a few exeptions are probably in your tool box.

I dont know what all the other guys here do, but I can tell you I always pull the bowl and remove the impeller nut before disconnecting the motor, saves having to use a spline wrench and seems less damaging to the shaft.

Everytime I see someone pull a pump apart the first time the hammers come out of the tool box right away, leave the hammers for working on outboards. ;D

You will need a quality puller for the impeller, once the impeller is out of the way your home free. always use new zerk fittings, clean everything up, and use new packing material.

After she's all done, use a quality grease and stick with it, cross contamination is the biggest cause of early bearing failure in a pump next to moisture, some of the exotic lubes available don't mix with others.

As far as putting grease in to see if things quiet up, it may quiet up for a few minutes and if it does get quiet, the bearing is toast, just my .02c though...

I agree with Tom on the leaving stuff hooked up, less crap to put together...

heres the pump info:   legend     J120-E , ser# 0142 , A -impeller.     The impeller still looks new!  So if I got it right it goes like this: unbolt the bowl, pull the motor, slide shaft out, press off bearing, install bearing, and reverse other steps.  When I pull bowl I'll loose gear lube, what should  I put back in! Is it ok to replace the old packing with the synteft like on a comp ski boat?

Personally I'd put seals gasket (or orings) ,basically a kit and freshen it as long as you going to that much work as base pump kit is cheap Tom

btw  the lube is 90 wt gear oil (or lots of other options0

Perfecto!, There is no Hocus Pocus in there just a couple of babbit bearings, the normal Mercury hypoid gear lube is made by Chevron oil and is the same grade as say Sta-Lube Hypoid 90 (Merc synthetic will work also)

so I'll start pulling it apart day by day! Merc synthetic it is! we buy it by the drum! I was told legends have O-rings not gaskets, is this true? If the ware ring looks good do I leave it alone? just do the bearing right?

I got one of these pieces of garbage and the bearing went bad to the point where it pushed the shaft and impeller back into the bowl flange and cracked it off. I have no choice now but to remove the whole drive but it seems to be glassed in and pulling the motor you can forget about as it looks like it was put in the boat before the cap was put on. Any ideas or tricks how to get it out of boat without pulling motor and ruining transome and or fiberglass? Also anyone have or know where to find a used one?  :banghead:
