If you did that it would have no way to bleed off the excess pressure/grease (there's only one plug on the top) and I think you would have a high risk of "jacking" the seal out.

Well Hotrod,  I beg to differ with you.  I have a Jetovater and there are 2 plugs on my bowl.

When Omar and I redid my pump last weekend, we noticed the bowl seal had already came out...tried to put it back in but it went back in too easy. So we called Tom at JBP and 396 from Hot Boat and both said it's perfectly OK to pull that seal and the center bowl plug on the outside of the bowl and just have the bushings water lubricate. If you don't run in really sandy water you'll be perfectly fine. Just my $0.02.

Uhmmm... OK. Someone turned your bowl 90 degree's and put on a Jet-O-Vater on your pump just like someone did on The Chaz's boat. Cool. So you fill your pump with grease and have no problems (right?). Then I think you just answered The Chaz's question. Are those grease zerks or plug's?

ok, now i am confused, the pump is back on the boat, before i installed it i pulled both plugs, turned it upside down and nothing came out?, shook it, left it sit for awhile and nothing, i had never checked the oil in it before, it only has 21 hrs since being redone, now i read jetaholics post, is it possible this was done to mine, i have never seen it "leak" so if it had fluid, where did it go--out the nozzle, i would think there would at least be some residue someplace?, is there an easy way to find out or do i need to pull the pump again---please don't tell me i need to :'(

I'm no expert but I have pulled off a lot of bowls off of Berkeley pumps. None of them dumped oil. Where the oil sits theres a cup shape to it, on all sides.

I am no expert either, but kyle's 12jb dumped this which looked like something found in baby diapers...

and on a side note, the bowl became separated from the suction housing very easy....which i was told was rare....it usually takes a lot of muscle and a good mallet to get them separated.

That doesn't look like just oil.  ;D

I usually have to seperate them with a large screwdriver and a sledge hammer, I don't recomend my technique BTW.

Hi Hotrod,  They are square plugs.  This thing came with the Jetovator from Miller when it was built back in 1975.  You may be right about the turn though as everything else on this power plant has been jacked with.   >:(  AND I do mean JACKED with.

Mine is turned like that, but the plugs are on the other side of the boat.  I guess mine was turned and reattached 180* opposite of yours.

In The Chaz"s post he was trying to find out how he could fill the area for the oil with grease rather than oil. I've only seen a few Jet-O-Vater's but they were all mounted like The Chaz's and yours with the bowl turned 90 degree's. I think he was concerned about jacking the seal out if he used a grease gun.

Hey Chaz, I bet you could install a grease zerk on the bottom of the pump (where the lower plug is now) and when you want to add grease just remove the top plug before you pump in new grease. That's how oil is added to the bottom end of outboards also.

Hmm...  I'm sure I have some fittings in my tool box I'm just not sure they are the same thread size, seems like they were smaller.  Do they make different thread sizes for the grease fittings?

I do know that those threads are a pipe thread, but cannot remember if they're a 1/8" or 1/4". If my memory serves me right, they're a 1/4" pipe thread.
