Rope seal

Can I change the rope seal with the pump and motor still in the boat?

I use a Lysle  tool Sneaky Pete. Looks like a little corkscrew.

You mean on the other side of the packing glands, yes. There are several individual ropes.

Let me know what new swear words you come up with.

the kit comes with 4 rope seals. That sound right? I will for sure let you know what new i come up with in the process of changing it lol.

Yes. Be sure to get everything out. I clean the shafts with a WD40 like product (Amsoil MP Spray) and Scotch Brite pads.

I buy the stuff (packing) by the pound, but I probably do 20 or so a year.

How often do you need to change the rope seals? How can you tell if they are worn out or bad? Just curious, because I changed mine like 2years ago and have only been on the water probably a dozen times, seals still look good to me

You could add a zerk while you have the seal out...will keep em greased up prolonging life.
