Speedometer not working
« on: January 28, 2014, 06:30:45 AM »
Speedometer died last summer. Pitot tube type. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/diagnose the problem?

Thanks,

It works on pressure-
You can use -SOME- compressed air to see it there is a break in the line somewhere. (less than 5-10 lbs)
100+ lbs is NOT recommended.

The indicator works on water pressure.

Make sure your rubber hose isn't kinked or stopped up with sand or mud.

Take a short piece of hose and hook it  the the back of the speedometer. lightly blow into the hose.

You should be able to max the speedometer out and it should return to zero smoothly.

If that works, then look at the hose or pickup.

Are speedometers on boats really that accurate anyway? Other than GPS

I removed the speedo and bench tested it (see picture of me hyperventilating). Needle barely moved, so I guess the speedo is not working. Has anyone had any luck cracking one of these open to see what makes it tick?

I bought the auto meter one from summit racing. It works great and even has a built in hour meter. It was kind of spendy but it looks great, matches my tach, and always acquires signal in @10 seconds.
I had the lowrance one in a race truck I used to have and it worked ok but was plane looking and had a huge transponder/receiver. The auto meter one is only like 1 1/2" square and 3/8" tall. You can hide it just about anywhere.
