Title: Think something is wrong with my Jet
Post by: gokartrder on July 08, 2008, 08:55:14 AM
Hey Guys! My name is Chad and I just bought a Jet Boat about a month 1/2 ago. It needed some minor things done to the engine and I took care of all of it to get the engine running real good. Only thing is I didnt touch the Jet and dont know much about them. I took the boat for a couple test runs as I was getting the engine right and once I did it was running great. Well this past weekend I took it all the way out to laughlin and the first day out something went wrong. It was running good all day and then at the end of the day I went and got some gas at the station on the water. After I was done getting gas something was different. The boat was moving but as I gave it gas it was barely going anywhere to the point where my engine was screaming and my boat was barely moving at all. I still have direction and reverse but just barely any power at all. Only thing I can think of is its got to be the Jet but I am a Noob to Jets so you guys probly know exactly whats wrong. Could you please help and point me in the right direction on where to start. Im kind of bummed out. I have been prepping all the little things on this boat and getting the engine to run real good since I bought it and it didnt even last a full day at the River =[

You've cavetated the pump, you have something stuck in the impeller. Climb under it and look up in there.

Sounds like you sucked up a rope!!! If you can get to the handhole cover try to look inside , if not crawl under and look through the intake grate.

it dont take much, one little rock. I could never see into the handhole cuz it was way under the transome, took a peice of copper pipe and knocked the rock out and away we go

i agree. you got something stuck in your pump. i sucked up some rocks last weekend and same thing happend. on the top of my pump by the transom there is an inspection/ clean out cover that you can take off. just be carefull doing this while the boat is in the water becuase it will fill up the boat quick...

good luck.

let us know what you find.

Really? Thats it?!?! I didnt use my boat for the rest of the weekend. I did think the same thing though and I stuck my head under there and didnt see anything hanging out but I couldnt get far enough underneath it to see directly up the intake grate. Where is the hand hole cover? And where is the inspection plate? Im sorry....I am a super noob to Jets and I am just trying to make sure I know exactly where to look. This is actually good news to me though. I thought I was going to need a new Jet. Thanks for the replies. This site is awesome! Thanks for the warm welcome also.

#4 is the inspection cover. Behind the motor but in front of the transom(on most boats). A jacuzzi pump will be very similar.

The first rock I had in my jet was not stuck in the impeller it would drop down to the grate at idle then move up at around 2500rpm.

Welcome.

How did you get that one out crewchief?
Title: Re: Think something is wrong with my Jet
Post by: AQUAHOLIC on July 08, 2008, 01:57:48 PM
you just have to keep working on it. last weekend i had about 4 large rocks in that sucked up in there. i got three out from that inspection plate part but one fell back down to the grate. so i ran it again and it got lodge back up by the inspection plate i removed it again and pulled the rock out.

if your boat is out of the water you should be able to get a good look at everything and find if anything is in there pretty easily.

let us know what you find..haha

It sounds to me like you had something over the grate (cardboard, plastic bag, who knows?) did you turn off the engine and try again? I actually had this happen a few years ago at a gas dock, dove in to check it out and found a plastic bag for ice stuck to the grate. That beeing said, a rock or mud can do the same thing.

Hey GT! Thanks for the reply. I did turn the engine off and then tried it again. It was the same as before. I pulled it out that day and I did look under where the intake grate is and I didnt see anything. But the grate itself is pretty far away from the rear end of my boat.....I havent got the chance to look straight up it yet.
I was going to try that and then try to see if my Jet has a hand hole cover like mentioned before but it looks like boost said somethign about a loader bearing?? Is there something I need to know about that?

I'm betting you have one of three problems, now that I think about it.

1. There is something in the impeller, very likely. (unlikely if you were not in shallow water).

2. If this is a new boat to you and someone had the pump apart, they technically could have left the key out of the impeller and its slipping (also unlikely but plausible).

3. The crankshaft on the output broke, I would hope you would know if this were the case. The reason I bring that one up is if you tie the pump up hard and fast enough something has to break, could be the crank or the input shaft to the pump. very very unlikely.....

Hope this helps you out.

BTW haven't heard the story but there is a "loader" bearing joke floating around...

How did you get that one out crewchief?

Anytime I get anything past the grate I have to pull the boat out of the water and remove the grate for access.  Because of the location of the jet my hand hole is under the rear transom area and I only have one elbow in each arm so access is limited.  ;D

Last year at AVI I had to get a ride back up to pick up my truck and trailer and drive back down to Needles to get tho boat out of the water (what a pain in the a**)

Your pump WILL have a hand hole cover. They all have them. If you're looking under the boat, you need to look through the grate, not just at the grate. ;)

Good luck. ;D

Ok....I am going to take pictures of my Jet from the inside of the boat to see if you guys can tell me if the Hand Hole cover is there or not. I havent had the time to look up into the grate yet. I tried right after it hapenned but its so far that its really hard to get under there. I will probly do that this weekend. I will check in those 2 spots and if I dont find anything then I will let you know GT and then we can go from there. Seems like you know of a few different possibilities. I am really just hoping its something stuck in there. Like I said before....the boat was running good and strong with no problems untill I got gas on the water in a deep spot too. I was on Lake Mohave by laughlin and if you ever seen where you gas up there by Katherine Landing its really deep but there are ropes and stuff there so I am hoping to find something.

Probably be cheaper to pull the Panther out and glass in a Berk. But, everyones got their own opinion on that subject, and some people just like to be different. O0

On my CV23 there is a little button that pulls out to engage a Neutral right at the throttle.   Does you boat have one???

On my CV23 there is a little button that pulls out to engage a Neutral right at the throttle.   Does you boat have one???

Electro, Morse (and similar) combination hand throttle/shifters have a "neutral" push pull button which internally disengages the shift function to allow throttle only operation (engine warm up etc) The majority of boats we see /deal with have foot throttle with seperate fwd/rev shifter . As i'm sure you know Jets have no "true" nuetral and will nearly always move/creap one way or the other when that "button' function is used Tom

Hj  Regarding the expense of the Panther conversion vs the removing of the Panther to modify the hulll for a Berk style jet ,if done right the conversion is still much less $ time you factor the intensive (10 to 12 hrs min) labor to remove ,build in glass ,fabricate transom pieces, rebuilt a jet ,the expense of the jet and intake, different drive line not to mention all the annsulary parts and pieces etc which add up . We done several full swaps (not cheap) ;)

Thank you very much Tom! ;D

How well does a converted Panther perform, compared to a Berk style pump? Cause the Panthers are axial flow pumps whereas the Berk styles are mixed flow pumps. Does the conversion also convert to a mixed flow impeller? Or are the main issues with the pump just the flow of the bowl and nozzle? Cause I know that the crazy Canadians at Outlaw Eagle Manufacturing use axial flow pumps in their aluminum river boats, and they get some pretty decent #'s out of those things. ;D

Thanks again Tom for the clarification! ;D

Ok so I dug into my Jet this weekend. I couldnt believe what I found. First of all my friend is a drunken idiot just to put that out there. So when we were out there on the boat that day the rubber lining on my boat kept hanging off a little in some spots....I think it needed to be replaced. It was bugging my friend so he asked me if he could just pull the whole thing off because I needed a new one anyways so im like whatever I dont care. Im sure you know where this is going by now but uh yeah......never saw where he actually put the rubber but apparently he threw it in the water right under my boat. It took me 5 hours on Saturday to get out what I did. The whole rubber lining was in there wrapped around the shaft. Meanwhile the "friend" who did this was at the river again while I was sweatin my ass off fixing his mistake. Not to mention earlier that day we were chillin with some other guys who had bigger badder boats with props and they just kept talking about how my boat was a piece of shit....jokingly of course but then that happens and I had no clue at the time as to what was wrong with my boat.....so yeah of course I showed up the next day without my boat and those guys just laughed. Thats all I kept thinkin about as I was using a razor to cut through each layer of this lining. But yeah....I am at work right now and I have pictures I am going to post up tonight because I am sure you guys would like to see....and have a good Laugh. I have a problem I wanted to ask you guys about though. There is still a little bit of that rubber in there. Its too deep to get to it from the top opening so I went underneath the boat. I can see the last pieces from the bottom but I need to remove the grate to get to them. The screws are flathead screws and there are 2 of them that I just cannot get off. I tried and tried to get them off and they just wont budge. Was wondering if anyone has come accross this problem before and how you would go about getting those screws loose. I will check back a little later to see what you guys say and also to post pictures of this stupidity. Thanks for the help also. My Jet does have a hand hole cover right on top and thats how I got most of it out.

Word of advice. Don't invite your friend the next time you go out. Try to fish the rest of the rubber (I am assuming rub rail insert) piece with a coat hanger. I had to do this with a Kawi Jet ski to get a piece of wood. Once you get it up and running just run past those big boats when they go to get on plane.

Did you thow that rub rail insert out yet. I have been looking for a piece for my Nordic and it looks the same. It may sound stupid but some of it looks salvagable. I need like 8 feet.
I will pay shipping via paypal if you have it still. PM me if you do.

Sorry T.J. I dont think you want any of this lining. Its was wrapped around the shaft really really tight. I had to go at it with a razor blade. I dont even think there is a 2 foot piece still intact. Not to mention its just really messed up.

Jet??

In my humble opinion I wouldnt strap your boat down by the jets bowl. I believe someone on here can tell you about there issues with that.   The eyebolts are pretty cheap and the better way to tie it down.

Why wouldn't you strap it down to the bowl? That's probably the strongest part of the entire boat! There's 38 bolts holding the pump to the boat, along with a thick layer of epoxy! I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm just curious about the reason. ;D

Thanks. O0
