Think something is wrong with my Jet
« on: July 08, 2008, 08:55:14 AM »
Hey Guys! My name is Chad and I just bought a Jet Boat about a month 1/2 ago. It needed some minor things done to the engine and I took care of all of it to get the engine running real good. Only thing is I didnt touch the Jet and dont know much about them. I took the boat for a couple test runs as I was getting the engine right and once I did it was running great. Well this past weekend I took it all the way out to laughlin and the first day out something went wrong. It was running good all day and then at the end of the day I went and got some gas at the station on the water. After I was done getting gas something was different. The boat was moving but as I gave it gas it was barely going anywhere to the point where my engine was screaming and my boat was barely moving at all. I still have direction and reverse but just barely any power at all. Only thing I can think of is its got to be the Jet but I am a Noob to Jets so you guys probly know exactly whats wrong. Could you please help and point me in the right direction on where to start. Im kind of bummed out. I have been prepping all the little things on this boat and getting the engine to run real good since I bought it and it didnt even last a full day at the River =[

You've cavetated the pump, you have something stuck in the impeller. Climb under it and look up in there.

Sounds like you sucked up a rope!!! If you can get to the handhole cover try to look inside , if not crawl under and look through the intake grate.

i agree. you got something stuck in your pump. i sucked up some rocks last weekend and same thing happend. on the top of my pump by the transom there is an inspection/ clean out cover that you can take off. just be carefull doing this while the boat is in the water becuase it will fill up the boat quick...

good luck.

let us know what you find.

Really? Thats it?!?! I didnt use my boat for the rest of the weekend. I did think the same thing though and I stuck my head under there and didnt see anything hanging out but I couldnt get far enough underneath it to see directly up the intake grate. Where is the hand hole cover? And where is the inspection plate? Im sorry....I am a super noob to Jets and I am just trying to make sure I know exactly where to look. This is actually good news to me though. I thought I was going to need a new Jet. Thanks for the replies. This site is awesome! Thanks for the warm welcome also.

#4 is the inspection cover. Behind the motor but in front of the transom(on most boats). A jacuzzi pump will be very similar.

The first rock I had in my jet was not stuck in the impeller it would drop down to the grate at idle then move up at around 2500rpm.

Welcome.

you just have to keep working on it. last weekend i had about 4 large rocks in that sucked up in there. i got three out from that inspection plate part but one fell back down to the grate. so i ran it again and it got lodge back up by the inspection plate i removed it again and pulled the rock out.

if your boat is out of the water you should be able to get a good look at everything and find if anything is in there pretty easily.

let us know what you find..haha

It sounds to me like you had something over the grate (cardboard, plastic bag, who knows?) did you turn off the engine and try again? I actually had this happen a few years ago at a gas dock, dove in to check it out and found a plastic bag for ice stuck to the grate. That beeing said, a rock or mud can do the same thing.

Hey GT! Thanks for the reply. I did turn the engine off and then tried it again. It was the same as before. I pulled it out that day and I did look under where the intake grate is and I didnt see anything. But the grate itself is pretty far away from the rear end of my boat.....I havent got the chance to look straight up it yet.
I was going to try that and then try to see if my Jet has a hand hole cover like mentioned before but it looks like boost said somethign about a loader bearing?? Is there something I need to know about that?

I'm betting you have one of three problems, now that I think about it.

1. There is something in the impeller, very likely. (unlikely if you were not in shallow water).

2. If this is a new boat to you and someone had the pump apart, they technically could have left the key out of the impeller and its slipping (also unlikely but plausible).

3. The crankshaft on the output broke, I would hope you would know if this were the case. The reason I bring that one up is if you tie the pump up hard and fast enough something has to break, could be the crank or the input shaft to the pump. very very unlikely.....

Hope this helps you out.

BTW haven't heard the story but there is a "loader" bearing joke floating around...

How did you get that one out crewchief?

Anytime I get anything past the grate I have to pull the boat out of the water and remove the grate for access.  Because of the location of the jet my hand hole is under the rear transom area and I only have one elbow in each arm so access is limited.  ;D

Last year at AVI I had to get a ride back up to pick up my truck and trailer and drive back down to Needles to get tho boat out of the water (what a pain in the a**)

Your pump WILL have a hand hole cover. They all have them. If you're looking under the boat, you need to look through the grate, not just at the grate. ;)

Good luck. ;D
