What Berkley do I have?
« on: April 27, 2014, 01:24:00 PM »
Without pulling it all apart, is there a way to figure out what exact pump/style I have? There is absolutely no stamping, rivited plate, casting numbers on it anywhere. It was at one time completely smoothed and polished inside and out, so anything that was there is now gone. Any tips based on my pictures??
Thanks, Ken

Berkeley 12JC, most of them came with A impellers, making the full model number a 12JC-A

You can tell that from my crappy pics?? COOL, THANKS. Anything "special" I need to know about them, other than the search function on here. Didn't know what to search for.
I appreciate it GT.

Nothing special, it's a basic good pump (I believe the most common pump on older boats) only down side is you can add any kind of droop to it. As compared to a split bowl.

Just going to say it out loud.

Less than 2% of the jet boats out there can take advantage of a droop. Not sure why you guys are so stuck on that.

It is not until you get into the low 600HP range that you can even make a droop work.

Because with a droop and 8 degrees worth of wedges in front of it that droop no longer is below the water line like it should be and now you have and knee knocker she it's on the trailer and a HUGE rooster tail when it's in the water.

Silly me... Should have guessed... You can also bore and offset bush the pins on a JC and do the same thing and save some shin meat.  :sly:

interesting is that because you need to make that kind of hp to begin to pick the boat up ?

I am no where near that kind of H.P. So not being able to use a droop isn't a big deal to me. I've got a bid on a Place diverted for it though.

The best possible answer I can give you is that it takes way more thrust to take full advantage of the lower thrust line, it wants to push on the lower "X" dimension on the transom and it tends to lift the boat form the middle, I have never seen a droop make a positive change to the typical 350 HP jet..

I am sure there are those that got it to work though. Or at minimum, think they got it to work.

I used to have a Chevy 3/4ton LS7 powered 4X4 pick-up with a four speed and my buddy/roommate had a 3/4ton Ford 4X4 with a 300 six, the thing had so much torque we had to build a set of traction bars for it. He cam home one night all excited because he got a V8 for his truck so he could make it "Like mine". I instantly thought he picked up a 460 for it. So I go out to the driveway to see what he picked up, it was a 302 small block. He was convinced that it hauled ass after the swap... I didn't have have heart to tell him he went backwards.. LOL

It did sound better though.  8)
