Looking to replace my fuel valve selector.
Any recommendations on brand, etc?
The pic is the original valve which seems to draw from the port side fuel tank (slightly) even if the starboard tank is selected.

Jet Pumps / Re: New person to jet boats

Do not run it out of water unless you disconnect the pump.

Just towing, you will get a lot of dirt in between the impeller and wear ring.  Running it with the abrasive dirt between the two will accelerate wear and degrade performance.

Even if you do run on the hose and manage to flush the debris out from between the impeller and wear ring, having water pressurized between the two will actually lubricate the wear surfaces.  This is just not possible on the hose.

Lastly, the packings are lubricated by water leaking into the boat at a rate of one drop every ten seconds.  This water comes from the suction housing being pressurized by the forward motion of the boat.  There is no way to replicate this with a garden hose.  Running the pump dry for more than a few seconds will burn and glaze the rope seals and also cause damage to the shaft where these seals ride.  Once the packings no longer seal, not only will you have water leaking, but they will also leak air, when the suction housing is under vacuum, causing cavitation to the impeller and bowl.   This usually occurs on the hit.

Jet pumps are pretty bulletproof if you take care of them.

If you must start it on the ramp, it is good practice (even if you don't start it on the ramp) to open the reverse bucket, aggressively back the boat into the water, then pull forward to flush the pump of road grime.  I do this twice.  Then you can start it for a few seconds, just to make sure it starts.

I would tune on the water because the pump will slightly load the engine.  You won't get that on the trailer.

While on the topic of what not to do to your jet pump:  Don't drive on/off the beach.  When shoving off, walk the boat out to waist deep water.  Bounce the stern a few times to flush rocks and sand out of the pump before starting the engine.  Keep in mind that the pump will suck sand off the bottom from 3-feet away.

Welcome to jet boating.

Cheers,

Joe
Wow!... Thanks Joe! Great read.
Just out of curiosity, l use this set up (water to both engine and pump) in my driveway occasionally...maintenance, etc.  Dominator 12JS...stock MP454.
What's your opinion, am I doing damage?

Just saw your post, had to work today. You can get them from anyone selling jet parts.

It's the white plastic ones in the pic, you only need 1.
Replaced the O-ring today as suggested👍🏽. Ran it in the driveway. I'm probably paranoid but what's the opinion on the water leakage just above the rudder shaft...normal?
Haven't had a chance to test it in Elsinore yet.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll order a seal kit.  PD???

PD?
It's not the wear ring. There is a plastic O ring that goes on the place diverter and slides back & forth inside the steering nozzle when you steer. Looks like it's missing and maybe a bigger gap than normal between PD & steering nozzle.

Jet Pumps / Dominator Pump Leaking
« on: May 26, 2017, 09:45:14 AM »
Had an issue at Havasu this week. It seems as my pump is leaking...wear ring? Decent thrust with 2 people onboard. Could barely get out of it's own way with 4-6 onboard.

I took a video (stills attached) of what I believe is the problem and would appreciate opinions /thoughts.

Thanks

Nice boat! Was it a fairly easy job to switch them out? I'll probably end up doing the same, for peace of mind.

I just noticed that I only have a port side internal baffle.
With external baffles, are both internal and external required / recommended?

I meant Flappers...Not baffles

This is what I made using Home Depot parts!

Any thoughts on the valve?

Copy that. Only got 5 (dip stick read full) quarts out with plug pulled. Knew that couldn't be correct. Didn't trust dip stick...

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Oil Capacity and Foaming...
« on: May 22, 2017, 11:30:30 AM »
Quick question for the jet boat whippers:
95 Carrera
Stock Marine Power 454
Dominator Jet
Online manual states 8 quart oil pan. Plus 2/3 for each filter.
Did an oil change just before this trip. Drained ALL of the oil. Added 9 1/3 quarts of oil...2 filters.
Now its blowing oil into the bilge and bogging down while trying to get on plane. Pulled a filter yesterday and drained approximately 1 quart, which seemed to help a bit.
Question is am I on the right track as far as oil foaming and too much oil...or any other ideas?
Thanks In Advance for any advice!

Wouldn't have thought of that. I definitely will check the throttle plates. Once again thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the quick replies Gents!  The throttle shafts don't wiggle, but it seems as though my problem is the spring on the secondary throttle shaft.  As suggested I'll rebuild this off season.

That's just it,  checked the linkage return with the wife driving and it returns properly.  Honesty I don't know why tapping the accelerator a couple of times corrects the idle.  Doesn't happen at Elsinore in 80 degree weather, more so at the river in ♨ weather.  That's why I was thinking internal carb issue. I'll remove the spring tomorrow as it didn't help at all.  Thanks for the advice!

I can pull the carb and drop it off for the rebuild GT if that is the diagnosis.

The throttle linkage is stock...I thought.  Just pick this boat up in Canyon Lake in April.  I haven't messed with the linkage other than lub and the tacky return spring.  As for throttle shafts wiggling, I'll definitely check that out tomorrow.  Sounds like the quadrajet is worth rebuilding which I'm actually glad to hear.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Rochester Quad. Carb Idle Issue
« on: September 02, 2016, 08:29:25 PM »
I'm hoping GT or someone can point me in the right direction here. I have a 1995 202xr with the standard MP 454/Dominator Jet. My issue is that when I decelerate, the idle will stick at 2000 rpms or higher (seems to happen more often in  extremely hot weather). If I tap on the accelerator pedal a couple of times it will drop back down to 900-1000 rpms.  Obviously I checked (and lubricated) the foot pedal, cable, and linkage...no issues there. Last weekend while at Parker I even went to Napa and added a return spring to no avail.
I've come to the conclusion that I should probably replace the original quadrajet with an Edelbrock 1409 or 1410.
Any suggestions/ideas?

Projects / Place Diverter Diode Kit
« on: May 14, 2016, 08:03:25 PM »
Any advice on how to make a diode kit for my Place Diverter?  Switching from toggle to steering wheel switch.  I know Place sells them, but I'd like to make my own...curious as to what's involved and why they ask $39 bucks for a couple of diodes, wires, and connectors.
