Engine Mechanical / Electrical / what casting number are these heads
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:51:36 PM »
I'm curious about a set of heads I had offered to me today by a buddy. He had them reworked years ago and discovered he still had them but knows nothing about them now. I don't see any identifying numbers like my dove heads in fact they don't have any markings except the numbers 45 right by one of the spark plug holes. They are iron heads since they have some surface rust and i'm probably just gonna pass but I was hoping that there might be something to them since he took the time to prep them at some point.

Does anyone know what they could be?
Seriously there is nothing else on them besides "45"

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Alternator problem
« on: July 06, 2014, 01:35:04 PM »
Yesterday while out on the water I noticed my volt meter was low and sure enough I had to jump it off to get underway again. I replaced it with a new one and didn't seem to work so I figured I had a broken wire so I found close to the end near the battery the wire was broken so I repaired it. I then started the boat and it read about 13 volts so I assumed I had fixed it. I then saw smoke and found the alternator was hot and smoking. I clipped the wire and that's how it sits.
Any ideas on what's going on with it?
I'm assuming what is causing this but up the other one.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Carb question
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:46:31 PM »
What do I need to change on my setup to get it to idle below 2000 rpms?
Tunnel ram with 2 600 holleys. It does not have 4 corner idle.
It revs crazy and seems dead on everywhere else but the idle.
If you try to bring it below 2000 rpms it just dies.
I wouldn't worry too much about it because everywhere else it's so clean and crisp but 2000 rpms is a little too much for a no wake zone and could prove to be touchy trying to load it on the trailer.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Jet question
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:15:55 AM »
I'm getting closer on my boat but I'm needing info on the jets. We thought it was a little lean and wasn't getting enough fuel so we tried taking jets out of the 850 carb I had on there before which happen to be 80s and put them in the front carb. Ended up changing plugs and wires and it's running a little better so I figured let's put the 66s back in the carb.
Here's the problem.
We cannot adjust the idle down below about 15 rpms or it dies and it has a popping sound on the passenger side so I'm assuming it's running lean.
My idea is to put the 80s back in the front of both carbs and then I can idle it down where it needs to if it's lean. Does this sound right?
Are the jets mainly for the idle circuit?
This is on a tunnel ram with 2 600 holleys.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / stroker crank
« on: May 28, 2014, 07:28:10 PM »
Im about to tear the motor down since it has a bad vibration in it just all of a sudden. If my crank has gotten damaged i was wondering that if I do end up having to change the crankshaft, Is there a different one I can put in like a small stroker type crank without having to change the rods and larger pistons?

I have 2 600 holleys on top of a weind tunnel ram intake. Its on basically a stock motor with a 270h cam. In the jet boat world it seems not nessesarily to big but in the car world it would be too much. Any opinions? It does have basset headers with no mufflers to help flow on the other end.

I currently have other problems with the motor since it has a bad vibration in it but im hoping its not a bent rod or the crankshaft messed up and if so i may go ahead and build it but im hoping not to have to. Gonna change the plug wires tommorow and hope for the best but i think its deeper than that. I want to run the twin carbs with the intake that ive invested in but I just dont know if it will be too much for it.

Probably gonna try it anyway but just asking for opinions on whether it will work.
Thanks

Also i'm curious if something is wrong with the crank, can i put a small stroker type crankshaft in it and leave everything else the same and reap any benefit without having to put a  full "stroker kit" in it .

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Tunnel ram
« on: May 23, 2014, 05:31:32 PM »
I just installed a tunnel ram on my 460 with 2 holley 600 carbs and it won't run right. Both carbs are supposed to be rebuilt and ready to go but it seems like the front ones acting up. I pulled it apart and sprayed all passages with carb cleaner but no change. It runs like 1/2 the motors not firing. If you pull plugs 2 and 5 nothing changes, but they are firing. I put a spark plug in the wire and it sparked. So it would seem no fuel to those cylinders..?
It has 15 lbs vacuum at idle and 19 while revving.
Both floats are set right and its getting fuel to the bowls, but if you look down in the carb you dont see fuel.
Once you rev it, it gets better but still has a miss in it.
Any clue what could be wrong?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / carb size
« on: May 10, 2014, 04:27:10 PM »
What would be the recommendation on a carb size for my boat? I know it kinda is hit and miss but right now I have a 850 dp carb and wonder if there's more to be had. It's a stock 460 with dove c heads with the larger valves, 27h cam,  roller rockers, offenHauser tunnel ram intake. Right now it's setup with the single carb top on it but I have the dual carb plate.
It runs very clean with the 850 holly but I thought about trying two Carter 625 carbs or I have dominator 1200 cfm that I can get from a buddy.
I'm just looking for opinions on if that's pushing it too much for a fairly stock motor.
Thanks

Jet Pumps / Please help
« on: April 26, 2014, 08:30:26 PM »
Can someone help me into what I need to do with my pump and what to expect to pay.

I have the berkley pump that doesnt have the extra bolt pattern for like a droop snoot. Not sure which one its called....

When you run it out of the water, ever so often it will make a sound that to me sounds like a bearing "barking" kind of like a deep squeal that echoes. Squeal is not really  the sound but im at a loss of how to describe. Its not grinding or roaring but it doesnt sound good. pretty sure a bearing trying to go out.

I took it out today and its has a pretty good vibration when you get on it coming out of the hole until about 3/4 throttle then either it goes away or it just kind of is not as noticeable.
Im sure I need to rebuild the thing but I want to break the 60 mph top speed and its really quick to get to top speed so I figured while i was in the maybe change the impeller?

Right now its a 4400 rpm max and running at 60 mph. I dont want to loose all the bottom end but It really seems to have plenty to spare.

How much performance could it cost me? Im guessing the skys the limit...

How much does it cost to go through a pump like this one?

Suggestions / Support / sticker suggestions
« on: March 30, 2014, 12:28:04 PM »
What's the chance of getting a sticker made like the logo you see when you open the app on your phone? I would sport that on the front of my boat if you sold them large enough.

Thanks,
Steven

Interior / new interior for $650.00
« on: March 29, 2014, 08:28:29 AM »
I just had to throw this out there for some of you guys who are in need of a new interior but not willing to dump a ton of money into it.

I picked these up for roughly $120 a piece and if you do this dont settle for the cheaper Rugged Ridge" or Onyx" brands because they are made in china and have constant complains about the frames breaking. I really didnt want to take the chance being right in front of the motor.

They can be bought in a variety of colors but it seemed to be a struggle to get anything but black from the local off-road shop. BEFORE... you guys jump on me for the foolishness of them being BLACK and SCALDING hot in the sun the look pretty damn good against the blue. I can always put neoprene seat covers on it but they do come in tan, spice, and grey besides the black.

They are Smittybuilt low back bucket seats for a Jeep which means they are made for the weather and to be wet all  the time. They have a lifetime warranty on the frame and a year on the material but being that they stay covered up or garaged 90 percent of the year they should hold up for many years to come.

You can get them in different materials also.

Its still not completely installed in these photos, More or less just mocked up, but you get the idea.

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / any ideas on a fuel tank?
« on: January 22, 2014, 07:34:00 PM »
I am curious on mounting my fuel tank in the front of the boat. It was there before i bought the boat but they removed it and now I have the round barrel type in front of my engine. I have bought a plastic tank that I want to put back in the front but not real sure on how to mount it. I was thinking just mixing up some fiberglass resin and basically "glueing"  down a strap that i can then use to strap around the tank after it drys .
What are your suggestions on the best way to do this?

I have seen a set of 849.00 aluminum heads on ebay for the 460 but im not sure which ones to stick with. I got the a2a heads on my boat now but ive got a set of c8ve-e heads that have been ported that I can put on that are completely reworked but ive come across these that are always available if you look at ebay it has all the specs.
Didnt know if someone could tell me if they would work better for me.
So far its just a flat top 460 with a few small mods
270 cam ( largest cam i could run with press in rocker studs)
matched springs and lifters
billet dist. and coil
offenhauser tunnel ram
850 holley double pumper carb

Im planning on installing a 305h cam so im looking to kinda match that setup that will work best
 Thanks for any input.

The No Wake Zone / Give me The Basics
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:00:43 PM »
Hello everyone!
Im new to the whole jet boating thing myself and just wanted to get some advice from some of the seasoned pros on here.

I just bought a 1969 Esquire jet boat without an engine and dropped in a 460 since that was what its set-up for.  It seems to run well but I want more!

I made the mistake of not putting a cam in it since at the point of all this I had not had it in the water yet I just wanted to make sure it floats so i went as stock as possible to keep it cheap.
Good news it floats but its not a performer.  It ran today at about 54 miles an hour, so quick to get there but thats all it has.
I was hoping for some suggestions on a cam or other mods to get more out of it. Im only turning 4200 rpms and cant get anymore. I know that the motor came out of a service truck and had an rv cam in it which I believe to be the main problem.

So far the mods are :
bassett water injected headers
weind intake
holley 650 double pumper
hei distributer

Thanks for any suggestions on a good cam set up or anyrhing else you can help with.
Also its a berkley jet
