MSD is Multiple spark discharge. MSD used to be a brand name years ago. Nowadays, everyone makes them.  Basically, you can hook one of these boxes up to your distributor, and have better ignition and the benefit of rpm limiting. It replaces balast resistors and such. Can be hooked to any distributor, points or not. MIght not be a bad thing since your tach is screwed. SAve the engine.

OIl modifications of Olds/Pontiac engines are needed no matter what. I know for a fact that pontiac engines have a bypass in the system to bypass the filter above 5k, and have heard Olds did the same thing. This is probably why your mechanic told you to keep it below 5k. There are fixes, but they involve some experts.

The fact that the system bypasses the filter at that speed tells me the oil system is inadequate to begin with. just my .02. Not that they can't be made into great engines, they can, but might be better to change it out for a BBC or BBF if you wanna hot rod it.

Then again, as a family boat, I'd say leave it alone and put a rev limiting MSD unit on it. Even at 45 plenty fast enough to ski behind. Twas my target before testosterone impeded ration.

Hey, just removed a water pump from the rebuilt street/strip engine (460 ford) I bought. Do I need to reuse the plate behind it behind the block off plate where the water pump should be or not? Might be a stupid question, but I can argue with myself both ways why it might be needed or not.

X2 GT, good answer. And an amazing description of how they work. I even learned something. Didn't know the technicals of it, but it makes sense.

We used MSD and Mallory in street/strip cars for the same reason. Acceleration. However, there are hidden benefits that affect mileage and engine wear and tear tho in everyday "Cruising". Far less chance of a misfire, leaving unburnt fuel from a cylinder or two being then blown into the exhaust. When that happens, that fuel is more likely to explode in the exhaust manifold from much hotter gasses and sparks from another cylinder that DID fire correctly. What this does is put a reverse pressure on all the exhuast valves on that bank. Not a good thing. Let alone what you've done to the exhuast. There is thought and theory that when you run these you can run a tad higher compression without the fear of detonation, which also makes sense.

Second advantage is that since you just put fuel into a cylinder and did not get the power from it, mileage suffers. That is common physics.

All in all, put a CD unit in, saves a lot of headaches and is as reliable as the sun.
