Well, this is one of those deals that I usually get involved with, I bought the bost last summer and it ran ok looked ok.  However, ok doesn't usually cut it for me for too long.  It started off as an upgrade in carb and ignition and has turned into a resto project. (Kinda like drinking in a way: "I'll just have a couple" then the next morning you wake up saying "What the F**K did I do last night")

So, I have the boat stripped and about $3000.00 or so in parts (carb, intake, MSD, Mondello oil restrictor kit (yes I am staying with the olds), throttle, shift, steering cables, new exhaust logs, pump rebuild kit, guages, just to name what I can remember off the top of my head!)

I am almost done building some new aluminum tanks and here are my .02 cents on that:
If you need new ones, BUY them!  Maybe I shouldn't say that because it has not that bad, but I could have had some shipped to the door for $650.00.  If you plan to build your own, use 1/8" as I used 12ga and I am having to TIG them and aluminum is not the easiest sh*t to weld!!

Here are my future plans (please comment back if you feel I my be going down the wrong road on something):

Engine: 455 olds G heads: Builder: Hugh Reynolds in Bakersfield
Fresh rebuild with new cam, install oil restriction system w/ 10 qt marine pan (currently has stock olds pan), MSD ignition, Polished Edelbrock Performer intake, Holley 750 dbl pumper, staying with logs, and Powder Coating block and heads metallic orange.  Wanting comp ratio @ about 9.0 or 9.5 to 1 if possible I would like to see 400 hp

Pump: Berkley 12JC, B Impeller, Berkley jetavator
Standard rebuild with swith to AA impellor and powder coating to match engine  Maybe a loader, anyone care to share some performance gains?

Trailor: American Custom Single Axle
Some welding upgrades, powder coat to match pump and engine, new wheels and tires, polished diamond plate steps and new lights / wiring

Hull: 1971 Kona 18'
Paint: White w/ pearl orange accents
Seats: White w/ orange piping and stripes
Carpet:    maybe black

Thats what I need to see    Very nice job!!! I will start posting pics as I get back to work on it (been lazy for the last couple months). I am going to paint over the deck.  The boat doesn't look anything like it does in the picture (as far as shine goes).  Those were actually pics that I got from the guy who sold it to me.  He rubbed the boat down with Marvel Mistery Oil before taking the pics.  Also there are a couple of stress cracks in the gel, so well, time to get out the wallet.

As for the Olds, I will probably kick myself in the azz this time next year and say I should have listened, but I have already bought non returnable parts (Mondello's).  I will mostly be sking and crusing with an occasional WOT burst.  (At least that is the plan, but you know how those change!) 

As far as your oiling and bearing issues, do you have a Mondello oil restrictor kit. Do you have any idea what kind of speed you are getting? And what size impeller are you running?

By the time I get this thing together, you may be sick of my questions!

Its been a while, so here is an update:

I had the engine built by Hugh Reynolds here in Bakersfield:
468 ci
10:1
Comp 280H cam (Lost on Run in  )
Full MSD ignition with 6AL
Should make 1 HP per ci, but we will see

We (dad and I) put the pump back together last weekend (with some tips from the pros at JBP):
Berk 12 JC with an aluminum A2 (I hope that it will turn 4800 or so)
I decided to keep the Berk Jet a Vator for now as it worked pretty good before I took the boat apart.

Interior:
Built all new seats (except for the buckets as they were newer and in good shape)
White with orange piping and silver stripe upholstry
Gray carpet purchased but not installed yet (boat is at painters)
All new guages (Hardin Marine)
All other new hardware purchased from JBP (great people to work with)
Built new aluminum saddle tanks
purchased stereo (Clarion)

Trailer:
New bearings / seals / bearing buddies
New cross members
boxed in frame
new fenders
polished diamond plate
new wiring / LED lights
new bunks
(I just need to buy some wheels and tires)

Hull:
At Painters currently (Kerry Naselroad, Bakersfield)
Shot White last week
Orange, silver, dark grey (black with silver) shot yesterday
Pinstriper (Ronnie Beam, Bakersfield) should be there today to work his magic
Some metal flake bling will be going into the colors and then clear


Hopefully I will get it back next week and start rigging this SOB and get it wet next month.

The one thing that'll drive you nuts is the oil drain line, I had the same one on mine and it took about 6-7 hours to drain the oil out of it. and if you get water in the oil the milkshake will take DAYS to drain. I drilled and topped out the bung and ran a 1/2 hardline to a bigger flexable drain line. I havn't changed the oil yet, but I am sure it'll cut the oil change time down considerably.

We were going to try and save the wood grain look and incorporate a new paint scheme around it, but it was to far gone.

Here are some pics with the colors added.  It still needs pinstriping, a little bling and clear coat.

yeah, that paint job looks nice and it aint even done yet....its modern with a retro feel....i dig it a lot.

No worries, it looks perfect the way it is.  Just don't go overboard with orange in the interior.

Funny that you mentioned that because the uphoulster (sp) F'd up and didn't put as much orange in the seats that I wanted (I was not happy individual), but I think that they are going to work good after seeing the paint.  I'll take some pics of the seats tonight.
