My supplier is out of 1/2" 304 seamless, so the hardline is on hold for the Holidays. Switched gears and am finishing the '31's frame and prepping for paint. Ladder bars, hairpins, drop axle, etc went out for powdercoat Tuesday and should be back next week. The undercarriage and frame are either being painted or powdercoated black metallic.

Picked up a 27 deep cycle at Tractor Supply in BHC WAY cheaper than other places...... who knew. I'll be finishing the wiring tests (mostly the MSD), spin it, prime it and fire it this coming weekend.

MSD checks out, pulling plugs tomorrow nite and fogging the cylinders. Spin it with the plugs out this weekend to check oil pressure, then throw the plugs back in. Put some fuel in the bowls and hope she sneezes.....

Spent a couple hours trying to fire it yesterday. First, got it to sneeze through the carbs and backfire (and scare the crap out of the dog). Turned the distributor 180 and nothing. I'll be going back to square one setting TDC on #1, checking the valves to make sure I'm not 180 out, and re-test the MSD. Good thing I don't have any river trips hinged on running this thing......

IT'S ALIVE! Went back to square one, verified TDC, set the initial timing, gave it a couple squirts and it lit off. I don't have the tanks filled yet, just running it by dribbling down the carbs. I can tell a couple things already..... it's got a LOT of compression, and pretty damn healthy. I'll bring some 103 back this weekend to get the fuel system dialed in and ready it for some water.

Well, filled the bowls with 110 and it cranks slow and doesn't want to fire. Looks like it's time to pull it and tear it down. It just went WAY down list of things to finish.....

This weekend the engine comes out and goes on the stand. I'm expecting some type of bearing issue, I just hope it didn't take out a rod. My painter has a freshly machined 454 he got in a trade and has generously offered it to me, so if I find a crank issue, I'll see if I can just put the fresh crank and bearings in to get it going.

I got it to cough but as I continued to crank it, some strange noises emerged. It was cranking slow, laboring on one cylinder and developed a thumping sound, so I decided to pull it apart.
As I suspected, it is a relatively fresh build. At some point a small nut fell into the intake and ultimately wound up in this cylinder. That's the culprit for the labored cranking and the thumping sound. No apparent damage to the piston crown or upper ring land, so a little clean up, new gaskets and it's time to fire it. I hope I don't need any more good luck the rest of the year!
I'll be looking for a number on the piston to try to determine the CR, but it sure isn't 8 to 1 with a dome like that.

Glad nothing was damaged. I just hate seeing stupidity like that though. When I bought my blue boat we found a nut under one of the carbs.

Doing more homework on this engine. With the block and head casting #s and piston style, it looks like this started life as an iron head 425 horse L78. I'll be trying to find some specs on the roller cam before I button it up again. It makes a little more sense now why there are 2 750's on a tunnel ram with dome pistons at 11:1. No pump gas for this, but I should come off the trailer over 60 mph

Pulled the piston out and the top compression ring was a tad tight at the point of impact. Dressed it up and checked the rod and bearing and they're OK. Other than the carbon on the pistons, you would think this engine was just assembled.
Gaskets coming, so it may get fired next week. Taking a week off from work to get the '31 over the hump and should be able to get this re-assembled and back in the hull.

While I'm waiting for gaskets to get here, I got curious about the hydraulic roller cam in this thing. Set up the dial indicator and measured the lobe lift, so with 1.7 rockers this cam comes out to .600 int, .560 exh gross lift. Can't tell what the duration is, but at least I know it's a fairly stout RV cam......

AND the heads go into the shop Monday. I have one intake not sealing, so might as well send them in for an inspection, lapping, whatever they need.

I'm GOING to take this thing out, but will probably be selling it it. Not a matter of speed, just has a lot of compression and I don't necessarily want a race only deal. We'll see when I crank this bitch up........

I just want to get this wet and see what it will do. With what I can see this engine is, I would expect to come off the trailer with an 85. Fine tune the loader and shoe and be tickling the century mark. Neat and all, but I don't want to throw 110 in this on a daily basis

Close as I can tell, these pistons with the 118cc 990 heads put the compression around 12:1. I could probably get by with 100LL avgas, but I"d be a lot happier with a pump gas deal.
Could I swap pistons now? Sure, but I haven't even had this boat wet yet and don't want to through any more money into it until/if/when I get a grin on my face to justify it.

I understand.. i just threw it out there cuz selling such a clean boat because of the size of the bump on the piston seems silly... unless you meant selling that engine not the boat..
