In my opinion I dont think the half inchers will be enough. When I first mounted mine I was wooried about the screws going all the way through, so I put shorter screws in, WRONG, mine came loose and fell off. Dumbshit me didnt realize that it was thick enough back there   Why couldn't ya  cut a piece of plywood biggger than the bracket, screw it to the stern, then screw the bracket with the 1" screws to the plywood and the stern, a sort of shim if you will

Beav, thru bolt that badboy with some stainless steel machine screws (if your boat was aluminum that is how you would do it. )

edit;, stupid me, re read the OP, if it is just the pump, then I would get a piece of aluminum and machine screw the plastic POS bracket to the aluminum then use 6 or 8 screws to hold the plate to the transom. 

Just make sure you use a NEW locking bolt/nut on the reverse bucket when you reassemble, and I would loc-tite the thing anyway!

There's some witnesses as to why on here with a JE pump............

As far as where to mount the pump, no help here. My Beisemeyer had it mounted to the transom, but seen them stringer mounted, gunnel mounted, and once engine mounted. But Glenn is probably right.

Stringer mount it, you don't want to be drilling holes through your boat for no fukcing reason.
