Got it home and in the garage and ready to start working on it. The pump feels and looks fine. Would the saying ( if it not broke don't fix it) apply with a jet pump??

Not really, Heres why...Berk calls for .012" wear ring to impeller clearance, the last one I puled apart was at .120" ( a fawkin sh!tload of wear/clearance, and the pump would cavitate. A tight pump is more efficient horsepower. The thrust bearing is how old?, Replace it. Freshen the pump, and put the power plant of your choice in front of it. inspect/detail the impeller while its apart.
I learned the hard way...
