Fuel tank installation help !
« on: March 08, 2007, 10:29:04 PM »
Here is my new tank ! It aint perfect , it has some imperfections but for $300 I cant beat it .

My problem is that I dont have full length stringers (yet) in my boat so mounting this thing is goin to a pain in the ass . If you look at the first picture , the tank has an extension that hangs down below the mounting bracket . I am planning on putting it in front of the motor and with a floor the mounting bracket dont even come close to the floor . Any suggestions !

Taht's a cool looking tank.  ;D

Are you not supposed to put screws into the floor?

Maybe you could fab some brackets and bolt it to the engine?

omar those are bad ass, how far below the bracket does the fitting hang?? i'm thinking that you could get some aluminum blocks to make up the difference and just bolt it to your floor. ???

Do you have enough room to fab a bracket from the bell housing bolts?

Yes you can screw to the floor but the fuel drain hangs below the brackets feet.

It's a little big to be bolting to the motor .

The extension hangs down about 2" below the mounting bracket feet . I was actually thinking of cutting two 2" holes about 6" apart and then cutting the section out between them to make a long hole with rounded ends just for the fittings and hose to sit in . I figure I already have a hole in the bilge area for the sub floor area to drain so it wouldn't be a big deal .

I also thought of screwing and glassing some 2x4 to the floor with some through bolts in them to mount to . At the races it'll only have about 5 gallons in them anyways so it wont be a huge amount of wieght sitting there .

I guess I'm gonna have to pull out my official Mickey Mouse ears and Official Mickey Mouse certificate and see what else I can do . Keep the ideas comeing though.

How tall does the tank stand, besides that it hangs further down than the mounts do?

24" tall, I would use brackets to get it up off of the floor before I cut a hole in the floor. I t would be a "cleaner" install if you did cut into the floor to get it as low as possible. 2 cents please  ;D

I'm kind of leaning toward glassing in some blocks to raise the tank up . The whole floor Idea is gonna go anyways . That is the only reason I dont have a problem with cutting a hole in the floor . Last resort though.

No matter what you do, you want to strive to get the whole setup as low as possible.  You don't want to raise the center of gravity any more than needed in any vehicle that you intend to corner hard.  The taller the mass, the more the boat will tend to roll into a turn rather than hold a flat attitude.
