My Winter Project

Ok, some have of you have noticed I sold my 460. So I might as well spill the beans as to what's going on. My wife and I decided to quit putting it off and start restoring the whole boat. We will have it painted, interior done, rhino line the floor and bilge, drop in a 501 (from Tom @ JBP) and freshen up the pump (add a ride plate, snoot, etc.). I will post pics as we go. The only thing is that we might end up not getting wet this summer. But I'm going to try and work some ot at work and get the extra cash to get us on the river by June at the latest. We'll see what happens.

you can probably pick up a good hull less motor for 3k with all that done to it.
i bet your looking at 5k min to do this to your hull. what make is your boat?

You'll be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay money ahead finding a nice boat that is complete, shit look at the Hondo that Sanger Pete is selling, beautiful freakin' boat, new shit everywhere on it, 5K, you can't build a freakin motor for 5k. Trust me on this one, I had almost 5K in the Tahiti, it still needs an interior, and the engine gone through, and the list goes on and on.

If you're not in love with that boat or plan on keeping it, don't restore it. Boats are cheap right now and you can get a hell of a deal out there, on some very good quality manufacturers. I spent enough to buy 3 or 4 nice turn key boats, but I plan on keeping this one. It's alot easier to buy a turn key boat, add some eye candy, and just run it. A 5 grand restoration will turn into 8-10. But then again if you want a project go for it. I'm sure nobody here will say

I'm actually doing a lot of the work. I will rough sand the hull 1978 Python (miller bubbledeck copy), painter gonna charge me 1500 for complete paint, blueprint bottom and long block sand deck, and paint trailer. I already cut plywood for interior and got 800 quote for that. I just need quote for ryno lining for floor and bilge. As for the ride plate and pump work, figuring on about 600 total if I don't upgrade impellor or bowl and I'm seriously considering a jetaway which is like 1500. I already have new guages (from Omar) and stereo (kenwood cd, jbl 6x9's, and jbl 220w amp). I do understand that it would be far cheaper to buy turn key hull less motor, but I can spread out the cost over several months and take pride in the work. :screwy:But you've given me something else to contemplate lol

I may look for a straight hull with good paint & interior. We'll see.

And yes, As Omar said, Open your wallet then bend over. The one thing I have learned very, VERY quickly is that boats are a lot like Ex-wives. Very, VERY expensive, but worth every penny, lmao

there is something to be said for doing it yourself, the satisfaction you get when you are finally done and can stand back and admire your work, estimate what you think you will spend/need then triple it

, if i added up what i put into forkedups rebuilds my wife would shit then kill me.

BTW just got a quote from a friend of a friend to Rhino line my Saguaro, $295. And do it at my house, sooo, dunno if that's low-ball or not, but sounds VERY reasonable.

800 interior
1200 ride plate minimin
800 pump minimum
thats 4300 minimum yes pride in doing it yourself is great. your not doing the paint, ride plate or pump so what are you saving

in the end you still have a python, not saying it wont be nice but, there are more desirable hulls out there with better resale value. in the end you have a boat worth 5k.

I beleive, and I agree with GT on this, the feeling of building it yourself is priceless. 'Tis why when the Saguaro is done, the Rebel will probably be given to my brother, in all likelyhood. (If he can STAND the heifer paint job)

Show me one guy on here who can get more than they have in their boats and I will volunteer to kiss their a** at high noon in the middle of the intersection of 7th and Washington.

But what you get out of them .

Rivertard bought his boat brand new in the 70's .
has over 6k in pump work ,
God knows how many motors ,
and he raised all his boys in it and still to this day keeps it like the day he bought .

I should be so lucky to make my next boat , modeled after "THAT" recipe .

Ralph is 100% right and is speaking from a rational point of view .
As the world knows , jetboaters by nature are gluttons for punishment .

Ralph is right, I would like to find a better hull such as a gull wing or tunnel (tpr stealth is ultimate dream hull) and I might stumble on a smoking deal for a better hull (wish I could have bought that biesmeyer (sp?) that was for sale a few months back. That would have been a fun project. But I will have to pay off my engine first and then I will start looking out there for a better hull. I looked at a few last week, but couldn't find anything that was cheap enough. There was a free hull here that if I had noticed it in time, I would have been all over that. Anyway if any of you come across a smokin deal in the meantime, keep me posted. As for now, working towards paying off the 501bbf and the associated running gear first and then I'll see what pops up. I do appreciate all the comments and ideas, keep them coming. Opinions are definitely welcome!!!
