One giant leap backwards.   :'(

I got a call from the mechanic. He highly recomends that my engine be rebuilt because it's in a boat. It's on the tired side, not worn out but it is tired. It doesn't need a rebore and the steel crank measures good. Camshaft is fine. I didn't degree the cam when I installed it and it is currently 8 degree's retarded. I don't have the cash that it requires. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. $1100 gets me my engine freshened up with new bearings and rings, valve job, and it all correctly installed.

Options:
Save my penny's for _ years and rebuild the current engine.
Find a different engine after saving my pennies.
Sell the whole project piece by piece.

FYI: if you've got a BBC with oval port heads and you're using a rectangular port intake manifold you need to use the rectangular port gasket set otherwise 6 of the 8 cylinders will have a huge vaccuum leak.

I think I'm going to puke.   :P

Tomorrow I'm dropping off a deposit to start the engine's rebuild. It isn't on schedule to be finished for a couple of months due to finances.   ;)  I don't want to dump this boat.

I got word today that my engine's parts are back from the machine shop. Crank was polished and ? nitrated or something like that, pistons and rods were ?, block was honed and surfaced, heads were surfaced and had a vlave job done to them. The mechanic is just waiting for $ to put the engine back together (correctly). He said it could easily be done in less than a week, bummer, since I won't have the cash until ______.  ???

Everyone is paying like they should on my eBay sells so it looks like I can call my engine builder tomorrow and tell him it's a go. The High Life didn't do as well as I thought so it looks like 425-450 HP is going to have to cut it. It definately isn't going to be a race boat with that set-up though.  :-\  I found out that it has a steel 427 crank in it, which makes it a 433 I guess (0.30 overbore) and not a 461.  ??? Should be on the water in less than 3 weeks, it would be a nice birthday present for myself. It should be a solid combination with that steel crank, forged pistons, 11:1 compression, and new cam... i thought about going with a roller cam, but with the heads limiting the breathing ability, and the $1,000+ price tag of a roller, maybe getting 50 - 75 HP more out of it, I'm going to have to pass for now.

I welded and grinded on tons of crap in the last few weeks and I got (damn, what's that word... ... ...) steel specks all over my boat. Now the specks are rusting, in the paint. Clay bar where are you??

500 >:D

You are probably the only one I know who has a jet boat that does 80 mph easily, that doesn't "it'll do a 100" on the trailer, with 500  >:D  horsepower. If you didn't have that shed out back...  :o   :D  I figure I would want 600 HP min. to go circle racing.

I wanted to sell the motorhome and get Plesh's 6/71 blower and Enderale fuel injection but I was advised not to... Chevy's are just generally ugly after they've gone through the bottom of a jet boat hull (unlike Ford's who look better after they've gone through the bottom of any hull).   >:D

if you think about it i turn 5200rpm coming out of the corner then back off  to 48-4900 rpm down the straight this is with a berk a aluminum impeller, and the pump was done up by jim brock. so if you look at the impeller chart, you tell me how much hp im using :-\

the boat is faster than i run it,

I think that chart is for stock (non-set back pump, no ride plate, etc...) Berkeley pumps... 5200 RPM looks like to me to be about 440 HP ??? ... I guess I'll have to wait and see how close I can get it to 80 mph... at least I can use my cell phone to figure it out.  :D

Set back adds to the stability . Not rpm.
