This is the original problem child jetboat, Ready for a rebuild ;D Blown motor then found out bad stringers, so it went to the back yard and forgotten about until recently. First we are doing new stringers, so today i started to clean it up a bit.
Yeah yeah i know here he go's again right >:D
Im telling you this is the one, i dont have no mo boats ;)
After stringers are done it's all about the engine. I cant wait to get it back on the water again.

Didn't the Fantasy have better paint/gel?

Didn't the Fantasy have better paint/gel?
Both boats have paint over gel ;) and yes i think the Fantasy has some better paint.
The white on my boat up close dont look so good, kinda like someone used a paint brush on it or just didnt prep it good enough.

Got some more work done today ;)
Check out my battery box, or what it used to be. I found the battery hold down and transome plug in it. I guess the previouse owner didnt want to lose it.

STOP!
Just run the ******! If you keep tearing shit down, you'll never have that boat on the water.
Put the engine in the boat, run it, see how it feels, have some fun with it, when the season's over
THEN tear into it if you feel like it.
Skip
-
Are you stringers done or almost done? if yes, I think I agree with Lucky; January is almost done; put that good lookin motor on a stand/dolly, fire it up, if it runs good, put it in the boat.
It was nice talking with ya yesterday; looking forward to meeting.

The whole thing is i want to make sure it will run for a season and rings/bearings are just cheap insurance.
But that is the plan, gonna run it and do a complete rebuild next winter ;) Maybe even go a little bigger bore :o with flat tops of course. Now i know.

Whats the big deal ??? If everything looks fine , then it just cost me some gaskets , and if not then i am glad i tore it down. This way i will make a full season ;D I will make Parker but i just want to be sure about it.

Then i ran some #'s and found out this is a 396 block with 454 heads ;D thats good it will lower my compression down to 10-1 or just a little lower. I can use pump gas ;D I talked to 429heads and we are going to work them , even though they are peanut heads they will be fine with the smaller displacement (imo)

2sav, like I said before, I would absolutley tear it down and go through it...... 396 block??? wtf?? Is that a shorter stroke or a smaller bore? The guy I got it off told me 468".... I found another set of rods that I'll bring out to you next time I come out, but they are 6.135 (i think std 454) I'm glad you pulled it apart and are going to take the time to build it right. The boat will take way more time than the motor will.......... Also, on the performance boat site, there's a guy selling a brand new set of ARP main studs for 60 bucks, that would be a good deal for that block.....
-
All factory BBC's use rods that are 6.135" long. The 396 has it's own stroke and bore. The 402 uses a 396 crank with it's own bore. The 427 is basically a 396 crank with a 454 bore.

Steve, let me know if I can help with anything. I'm sorry that thing didn't turn out to be a 468, and if you wanted to go a diff direction I would understand and give you your money back. sweet...ya know forged pistons fit w/ over twice the clearence as cast pistons. Thats why it's important to warm your enigine up properly before dropping the hammer, they swell up a little when warmed. Damn, if you would have ccalled when in town i could have given you my old calipers I got two new sets today. Any idea what the bore is yet?

You can do it, but the bob weight between a 396 crank and a true 427 crank are different. The pistons will weight more on a 427, so the balancer may have to add some metal to the crank.

2Sav, just out of curiosity, where were the helicoils? I didn't notice any in the head bolts and they felt like they torqued ok? I would be happy to help pay for some of the machine work or reimburse you for the block, like I said, I had no idea it was a basket case. I knew it needed going through, but this is outa control.........

Yeah the deeper i get into it, well anyways. I found them behind the head to block dowels. Machine shop said its very common for the 396 blocks that old :(

Let me know, as soon as I get some cash in from another part I sold I'll gladly reimberse you. Also, you can have the set of rods/pistons I was talking about. Sell the 396 rotating assembly, get a new std crank, and your back in business with a fresh std/std rotating assembly that is a 454.........

glad to see this working out.
-
So 2sav, I'm still curious about the helicoils. There's only 2 dowels per side, so does that mean only 2 helicoils in the deck on each side? My understanding is helicoils are just as strong if not stronger than stock threads. Don't know if the leakage into the water jacket would be an issue... I can't see throwing away a 4 bolt block that is otherwise fine because of that. Seems to me that you have a great opportunity as long as the other block checks out. If the rotating assembly is fine, just e-bay the block, rotating assembly, and the smaller heads. Keep the bigger ovals and have them gone through. I'll get the rods and order new .060 pistons for ya in what ever comp ratio you want. All you need to do is get rid of the 396 parts for enough to cover the cost of machine work on the block and enough to buy a brand new a Scat crank, and you're in business....... You should easlily be able to cover the cost of that for the 396 stuff. I know somebody would want that stuff if the only issue is the helicoils and the rest the rotating assembly is good. Would make a decent cruiser/ski boat package or who knows what. 4 bolts are getting tough to come by.
That way, you'd end up with a whole new rotating assembly in a fresh 468 block without any real out of pocket costs. I have been burned so many times on buying motors and stuff that turns out to be not what I expected, and I don't want to see people here get burned. This boat world is way to small to hose people and that's just not my style. I feel really bad about that thing turning out to be a basket case, and I know you're not putting all this effort into your deal to end up with a compromised package. Do it right and get what you want the first time, otherwise you'll regret it in the end.. Let me know and I'll be happy to help out any way I can...... Jason
-
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/pts/549492472.html
shoot, i may just have to go buy this.....
-
Looks like a sweet deal, couldn't reproduce it for that amount........ The only thing that would make me a little sketchy is the March pulley system. Usually those are full accessory systems meaning water pump, AC, etc. That means it was most likely built for a street rod or car. Clearences are diff in an auto motor and the cam might not be right for a boat. Then if you change the cam, what about the springs? Set up for high rev marine cam? I lost a motor once because the springs were not matched to the cam profile and it floated and dropped a valve.
Still looks like a great deal for what is there, I guess it would just take a little homework.
Can anybody explain the heliciol issue????? I'm not by any means an expert, but I can't see that it would be that big a deal as long as the bolt will torque correctly and it doesn't leak....
-

From what the guy at the machine shop said, the bolts go into the water jackets so there is nothing to stop the heli coil from just turning when you torque the heads down. I will know more tomorrow when i go back and pick up the heads. I had them tanked and magged. This time i will talk to the owner, i dont even know who this other guy was ??? never seen him there before but...........
That roller motor sure sounds good right about now....... But someone should tell him. All BBC are stamped HI PERF.... its nothing speacial ;)

It's always nice to find shit before it ruins your Summer! glad you stuck to your guns and had a peek.

::)
Lol Ralph. This stuff is good, I was going to use it and it only has surface rust, the picture makes it look bad. If Steve can't use it I'll take it back and give money back
-
Steve, I talked with several folks and the general feeling is that the helicoil issue should not be a problem as long as they are correctly installed and they hold torque correctly. I would not throw that block away unless they can verify that there is no clamping force left.
Having said that, I think the only reasonable course of action to take would be for me to refund you're money. I learned the hard way on this one, but It was my fault for not doing my homework and checking the numbers like I should have. I will be out there in a few weeks and I can pick up all the parts that went with the package. I'm sorry this thing turned out to be basket case and delayed your project, but I won't feel right on this unless you were getting what I indicated to you was for sale. As far as the rock goes, that one's a mystery to me. The motor did sit in my garage for a while with the manifold off, but I didn't see it when I put the the manifold back on. I even looked to check the cam for obvious signs of being eaten up and that should have stood out like a sore thumb. The ride out might have shaken it loose or something.
Let me know what your feeling is, but by your posts I get the feeling that you feel you got screwed and I don't want that. This stuff is costly enough as it is without spending money on bad parts........ From now on, I'll be taking stuff to my machine shop to be verified before this stuff gets sold. Starting a new business in this industry, I realize that your rep is only as good as your word, and I know that some folks in the past have made the mistake of thinking that won't catch up to them, it will and always does......... Jason

aint that the truth....someone comes to mind...
Jason, you're the man for stepping up and taking care of this. Some people would say something along the lines of "you bought it, deal with it". 2sav has had nothing but bad luck with trying to put together his project(s)....if i was him, i would have thrown in the towel a long time ago...probably after the first 460 joke that was sold to him. (see above)
now the true question comes up.....whats next 2sav?! lol

Yes i have to agree with Brad you are the man for wanting to take care of this, This brings back memories of someone else saying they will buy it back and didnt ??? Hhhmmmmm ;D
Ok now seriouse business here , i am going back to the machine shop today and talking to Dion. He is the man who knows what to do. I have done some research and i think i might be able to do studs like Josh said, But we will see . I also found out i can bore this block to a 427 ;D 1965-1966 they were going to produce a 409 but didnt, sooo...... i have a block with thick cylinders (for now) :o I dont want to have to start all over again. Jason you hooked me up with some good shit, dont think im mad or nothing cause im not. I get frustrated too quick i think. I started my vacation today soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......... ..................................its all about getting the boat done...
I will let you know whats up when i get back from the shop..... By the way is there a way to tell what cam i have? This is the # i found on it 975481

-
No problem at all Steve, I just don't want you to feel like I was trying to screw you over, not the case at all. I can understand frustration with these things as it becomes very easy to want to just say "f it" ;) ;) ;)
Let me know how the machine shop trip turns out............ Jason
-
Ok here's the scoop. Dion finally looked it over and said there is nothing wrong with it , and told me the guy i talked to dont even work there and just wanted my block :o
So now im in a different situation........ Dion said the block is like a gold mine its worth bank. He said i could sell it and the block alone will pay for my new engine , he has only seen two 396 blocks 4 bolt mains and they are getting to be very rare , mines the second one ;D
So as it stands now , i can sell it or i can build it or i can sell it and build the 454 i have sitting on the stand. I found one thats 2 years newer than mine, the guy wants $3,500 just for the block. i am trying to get the link but it aint working. What would you guy's do?? sell it or build it!!!!!!
Hey Jason were good to go , sorry for the headache this might have caused . Entirely my fault but i thought i was talking to a guy from the shop who told me the block was bad. I left it there so i never checked myself.
Thanks again for being a stand up guy ;)

have to agree with build it, you now know you have a good block :)
-
one last thing ::), if its a 65-66.....
This is from mortec:
"Big blocks, cast in 1965 and '66, used a "grooved" rear cam bearing with a matching "groove" in the rear journal of the camshaft itself. This groove provided an oil passage to the lifter oil galleries. 1967 model and later Mark IV blocks have an annular groove oiling passage cast into the block itself. The blocks cast from the '67 model year on use a smooth, non-grooved cam bearing and the rear cam journal for these '67 and later blocks is smooth and does not use a grooved rear cam journal. The reason this is important is that if the wrong cam bearing gets used in the '65-'66 blocks, no oil gets to the lifter galleries or up to the rocker arms. The '65-'66 grooved cam bearing has three oil holes to feed the cam journal and the two lifter gallery passages. The '67 and later cam bearing is smooth and only has one oiling hole in it. A few of the cam makers will provide a big block cam with the groove cut in the rear camshaft journal, but you can have your machinist cut a groove that is 3/16" wide and 7/64" deep in the center of the rear cam journal if you have a big block cast in the '65 or '66 model year"
-
Funny , thats one of the first things Dion asked me , if the rear cam bearing was grooved. It is ;D
Thanks again Josh, great info.

Glad to help, the block I used on the engine in our Miller project was a '67 396 block with a 454 crank. Thats when I ran across that lil piece of trivia, didn't apply then, but handy to know.
-
Hey steve, I'm glad it all worked out.... Sounds like you hit the lotto! :D You never know, that thing might be real valuable to somebody that is trying to put together a car with original equip or something... If you could sell that block and it pays for enough to build the 454, I would say go that direction. You wanted a 468 anyways....
No worries on my part, I just didn't want this thing to be a waste of cash for you, i'm glad it turned out to be a valuable piece for ya. Sounds like the last time I sold a used 4 bolt short block. Gave it to the guy for 1000 bucks without really looking into it. He called me back a week later and told me it had a fresh std/std Crower billet crank in it ($2800). Oops!!!!!!!! It's all good, it was just taking up space in my garage anyways and I'm glad to see it will help your project out!!! Jason
-
Thanks for being understanding and being a stand up guy, i just hope this show's everyone the kind of person you are "trustworthy" un like well nevermind >:D I dont know what im doing with the block but Dion is really wanting me to sell it , it belongs in a classic or restored car. i have to agree not just a jetboat. But like i said i told him to check the bore , hot tank it, cam bearings and we will take it from there ;)
2sav
-
have to agree with build it, you now know you have a good block :)
Did some more researching found a guy that deals with these blocks, gave him the casting # and he said its worth $1,800-$2,500 :o Dion was right i could build another engine by selling that block ???
I got time..........
2sav
-
Sweet, send that thing down the road!!!!! I just looked on the Summit web site and a new Eagle rotating kit with hyp pistons, forged rods, and a std Eagle cast crank (rated up to 700 hp I believe) will run about $1000 and comes balanced. Sell the rest of the 396 rotating stuff and the peanuts for enough to port those ovals and put some nice valves in it and you will have a really nice piece!!!! Congrats man, you really did just win the lotto!! ;D
-
Yeah i do hate to see it go into a jet boat and not what it belongs in , but i have to be reasonable here and go the cheapest and best way. Parker is coming up to quick and my goal is to make it to parker ;D so unless i find a buyer within a couple of days , its going into the Omega ....
